A Discussion on Why I Want to Be a Nurse Practitioner

Nursing is such a diverse, very challenging, demanding and worthwhile career, however I feel the rewards would be great and that I am ready to embark on this career. It is a vocation for people who are practical, conscientious, dedicated, reliable, and who find it easy quickly to establish good, trusting relationships with new people through trusting people who are able to develop relationships with patients quickly. I have these skills and I genuinely made a difference to people, assisted them and their families through difficult times when they were at their most vulnerable. The role of nursing is changing as nurses are far more involved in the welfare of patients and this is placing more responsibility on nurses.

“My ambition from early days had always been to become a practicing nurse who makes a real and positive change to peoples lives. I have been attracted to the profession for two main reasons, firstly I’ve always had a interest in caring for people and liked the thought of working in a large hospital environment where I can be involved in the hands on medical treatment of patients. Secondly because I know its a financially rewarding and secure career where there are many employment opportunities for graduates in both the NHS and private sectors. I want the challenges that come with the job, always learning and developing better methods of care. The way one nurse treats their patient stays with that patient for years and I want to be a nurse and be remembered as one who cared, worked hard and did my best to maintain high standards in my work.

The role of the nurse is changing in the health system, with more opportunities for nurses to take greater responsibility for patient care and to become specialists in areas such as intensive care, cancer treatment and other specialties. I have been reading numerous essays on why individuals want to be a nurse, and their passion for the profession is truly inspiring. So I want to share my passion and maybe it will inspire someone like it inspired me.

Growing up and watching my mother's friend nursing career develop has in many ways given me a passion for nursing. I have witnessed her hard work and all the effort that went into the different stages of her nursing career, as an auxiliary nurse, to where she is today, a registered nurse in charge of Infection Control. I remember her as a student nurse and feeling sheer pride at her commitment and selflessness and how she made a difference in a people's life and also the lives of their families.

Watching my grandmother strain n pain was something that disheartened me every day. Suffering from chronic diabetes, she demanded a lot of attention and considering her old age; it was time consuming to keep a close eye on her. Sometimes, she was unable to move from one point to another, other times necessitating us to rush her to the hospital, which was miles away from home. However, we didn’t lose hope, and I volunteered to be taking care of her until she got well. One day while taking her to the clinic, I was intrigued by the reception that the attending doctors gave us. He made us sit in the office and allowed my grandma to give a detailed account of how she was feeling. Step by step, she wrote the history and directed us to the admission nurse. Again, the care that she was given at the ward was beyond my expectation. Starting from dressing her, to assisting in feeding, drug administration, and others were conducted professionally, something that ignited my spirit to help the people in need.

My interest to pursue a career in nursing was largely contributed by what I witnessed while taking my grandmother to the hospital. The nurses were so much involved in helping the older adults, which improved my motivation to seek a career related to this field. Also, with basic knowledge of science from my previous biology class. I got attracted to human anatomy and how the drugs interact with the human body. Over the years, my huge concern has been how people with chronic diseases can survive, but I later, but I later learned that nurses play an instrumental role, in ensuring they become stable.

The desire to venture into a career in the medical field looms large in my mind. As I recalled back, I volunteered in community work, where we formed a group to help the underserved people. Our role was to help them with home chores and maintaining their cleanliness. Through this experience, I learned the importance of service to humanity and developed a positive attitude towards improving the lives of the people. Therefore, getting admission to your school will train me into a seasoned and tenured profession in the field of nursing.

Through this experienced. I already knew a lot of medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, and was learning more about lab work and medications at my workplace. I also was granted the blessing of being was able to work with some exceptional nurses that really cared for and about their patients; Nurses that would do everything in their power to make a patient feel better emotionally and physically. That is what I hope to be able to do: provide extraordinary care everyday. Maybe someday I can be an inspiration to others to strive for a higher level of care just as those I look up to were for me.

Although I understood that nursing was a very demanding profession I felt it was a very satisfying one where you have the chance to enhance people’s lives during their times of need. After all the hard work I put into my degree course and training I look forward to being rewarded with an exciting career that will give me excellent benefits, flexible working practices and plenty of scope for progression. Through my experience in the past few years, to me, nursing is more than a profession; it is a way of life, as so much of a nurse's personality and enthusiasm goes into my job.

At my nursing practice, I was involved working as part of a group, this has helped me become an effective team player which I believe will be useful in my new nursing environment as it will be necessary to use this strength to communicate successfully with other health professionals to determine what level of care is best for a patient. I am also involved in the counselling work. I performed learning support once a week with a girl with additional support needs. This involved undertaking activities with her and supporting her to communicate difficulties when she is finding things challenging. This is very rewarding as I can see what a difference it made for her to have someone who is willing to listen, and has made me realise how important this skill is when caring for people.

I do not think there is any task that is as satisfying as treating a patient physically, psychologically, emotionally and spiritually. Every day, no matter how tired and weary I felt at the end of the day, I was invigorated by the sense that I had made a positive change in the lives of my patients. To build upon my capabilities to help others.

As a sociable person and feel that I have the correct mental attitude, personality and social skills which are required to communicate effectively with patients of all ages and backgrounds. Through my recent work placement I have experienced the stresses and strains of working in a variety of healthcare settings and I was told by my peers that I had coped quiet well with them. It was over the summer months that I was fortunate enough to have obtained a placement at a local health centre where I shadowed professional practicing nurses and assisted them in medical ways. During this period I was mentored and got to see a vast range of patients in a multitude of different settings including their homes. This real live experience in a clinical practise gave me a new perspective on the nursing in a new settings and confirmed to me that I had made the right career choice.
