Reasons Why I Want To Be A Teacher And Help Children
On my journey through life I have met so many people from different walks of life and I have come to realize that each of us is born with a unique life purpose. For some their purpose and/or passion in life is obvious from the start, they know what they want, and they go for it, for others it is not as easy to identify and takes time. After graduating with my Bachelor of Science in Family and Community Services, I was still asking myself “what am I going to do with my life?”. I could not find a job that was perfect for me in that field, but I was determined I wanted to help people –children in particular; but at the moment it did not matter I just wanted to help. So, I decided to apply for a retail customer service position, and I got it. After eight months of working retail I realized that I was not only checking people out at a register; I was helping customers solve problems, training and encouraging co-workers, creating solutions for unsolved problems, and many other things. At first, I was defeated when I did not get a job in my degree field, but I believe I found my purpose through this job. It pulled out of me what was always inside –a teacher.
Many students do not have positive mentors at home. A teacher is often the one person in their life who is a steady mentor that the student can lean upon. In school, I always looked up to my teachers, the best and most memorable being Mr. Repko. Freshman year until I graduated high school, I made sure I had a class with him. Mr. Repko was the first teacher to write me a recommendation letter to East Carolina, I did not know what he wrote but I knew he believed in me more than I believed in myself. He challenged me, inspired me, and showed me that nothing is beyond my reach. I aspire to be like him and hopefully better with my students, because I know that is what he would want for me. I want to become a teacher because I believe all children need a positive individual to look up to that implants in them not only an interest in their academics but in the world around them.
I want to improve students lives. Being a teacher will give me the great honor of making students lives better. Education opens doors to new chances, ways of thinking and paths in life that students could possibly not be aware of before being introduced to my class. I am inspired by the idea of being able to help a student who is struggling, uncertain and does not have the confidence to see their own potential for creating a fulfilling life for themselves.
