According to, Vogue, they have been selling magazines for 126 years now. The first of which magazine came out in 1892. Vogue is one of the most well known and best selling fashion magazines to exist. Vogue has sold more than 2,800 magazines. The name of the magazine itself means even means, what is popular or fashionable at the time.
I know an extensive amount of information on Vogue. I have own and have read many Vogue magazines myself. I spent the proper amount of time thoroughly researching the history of Vogue as well.
Vogue magazine has made history in the fashion industry starting small and growing into one of the most prominent magazines of its kind. In this speech I am going to inform you on the history of Vogue and how they established their name. First, I will explain the beginning of Vogue itself and its foundation to success. Secondly, I will inform you on key events the magazine has experienced since its initial take off. Lastly, I will tell you what Vogue has evolved into today and its international influence. Let’s start off with where it all began for Vogue.
Vogue did not start out immediately with its notorious covers and major popularity, it took many years to become the company it is today. Arthur Turnure was the founder of Vogue and its first ever publisher. Turnure’s magazines were originally created for the elite class in New York City. Turnure hired the magazines first ever editor, Josephine Redding to create the perfect gazette (journal/newspaper) for his audience, according to Danni Cannon. In 1905, Conde Nast bought the magazine company from Turnure and changed up the magazine. Nast turned Vogue into a magazine directed towards women specifically. Nast also pushed for a refinement in the overall content and photographs. After Nast revolutionized Vogue, it became one of the most popular magazines in America leading to the first Vogue in Britain, then moving on to other countries such as, Spain, France, Germany and many others. Now that we understand the roots of Vogue, we will move into to transition period in between then and now.
Even with the amount of history Vogue had made already, they continue to push boundaries and stay on top of the latest topics, trends, and movements. Vogue continues to flourish throughout the test of time.In 1914, Edna Woolman became the chief editor for Vogue. During the time Woolman was in control, America went through disasters like the Great Depression and World Wars. Despite these times, Vogue continued to grow, in a time where downfall should have been expected. Vogue continued to hit important marks in keeping popularity. Vogue came out with their magazine in color as soon as they possibly could, a big landmark for magazines in 1932. Another large change came to the magazine when chief editor, Grace Mirabella, decided to make Vogue focused on more practical and affordable clothes for women.
Continuing on to one of the most well know chief editors, Anna Wintour, she worked with Vogue from 1988 to 2012, according to Jess Morley. Wintour worked in creating to most iconic and well known covers seen today, such as the top two largest Vogue magazines according to Borrelli-Persson. She also was able to blend high end clothing with more affordable clothing, creating an approachable place for both higher and lower class interests. I have explained to you the key points of Vogues past, now we are going to move on to what Vogue is today.
Today Vogue is extremely well known and highly demanded.Currently Vogue is published in 23 countries all around the globe. People consider Vogue to be the “Fashion Bible” today because of its dramatic impact of social media and fashion. Today many branches exist from Vogue, some of these being online as well.Vogue has variations of itself such as its online pages, youtube pages, and many other accounts on popular social medias like, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. Vogue also has many groups that are not as focused, or not focused at all, on fashion like, Teen Vogue, Vogue Living, Vogue Beauty, and Vogue Wedding. Vogue today consists of many media platforms that address important current topics, what’s new on global and media influencers, and of course all of the latest trends in fashion. Vogue is the place to go today if you are looking for entertainment, inspiration, or information. Now you should have a good understanding on Vogue and its history up to today.
