What preconceived idea/myth of aging was changed by this experience?
When we think about the aging of seniors or old age, we tend to envision seniors’ mentality and physicality declining. The myth of judging an aging seniors state of mind and behaviors is based on our own experiences thus raising misconceptions about aging. A senior’s life varies as some are more active than others, willing to gain new experiences and new connections. Although some seniors may feel unproductive, no longer useful or valuable, the term old age have different meanings for those who choose to explore the possibilities. Before doing the interview, I had a misconception of seniors associated with old age having depression, loneliness and feeling of unproductiveness. Though in fact, aging people are happiest when they reach their retirement age. Even though Mark had retired at his job, he did not feel unproductive as he was able to spend more time with his family, having time to enjoy hobbies, and he was able to be engaged to contribute to his community, making an impact on society rather than having his time engaged in obligations. Another myth of aging is the ageing population having several health conditions, thus limiting their abilities which slows down their mentality. As some adults can develop health conditions that need close monitoring and intervention, these health conditions can be avoided by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. As we age, taking care of our health and staying active by learning new skills, exercising, improving balance and circulation can help increase overall independence.
What did you learn from this interview to apply/consider when you care for an older person?
From doing this interview, I learned that by understanding old age is not a concept but the changes resulting from the aging process is individually unique, such as the way each individual thinks, acts and interprets and how that affects his or her life. The best way to understand the real meaning of old age is to listen and reflect on the meaning of aging through what is said by the aging population. The impacts of old age are encountered differently depending on the story of a person’s life, availability of support, social networks, personal values, beliefs and lifestyle adopted by each one of them.
What was the most interesting part of the interview? Why?
The most interesting part of the interview is when Mark told me to accept the natural changes of aging process, recognizing losses but seeing them as possibilities of take up new interests and opportunities and to continue to learn and experience new situations. The meaning of old age and aging process for the elderly depends on how that individual lived, how they’ve adapted and face daily challenges. I realize that I should not worry about aging or have misconceptions about it, as every situation that were faced with has its own characteristics and meaning that can change us individually.
