Terrible Working Conditions for Slaves on Farms
Slavery is the aspect whereby an individual involuntarily is associated with an activity and there is no way of remuneration which is attached to it. This begun in the 15th century when the whites imposed a no pay form to there slaves in this context the Britons. That is the specific persona is not compensated of his labour that he was imposed in. Servitude on the other hand has quit the same meaning as slavery which as well begun in the 15th century with its target being the Africans who would benefit the Europeans, but they may partly differ in reference to the indentured servitudes.
A good percentage of the growth of the British economy was highly contributed by the Africans who were such in form of slavery. Such was exercised in the early 1960s in the European cultivation farms in respect to Virginia Company, where they involved themselves in the tobacco irrigation as the Europeans cultivators. Servitudes who were the servants of the Europeans and were entitled to a small pay after finishing there mandated tasks, found that to some extent they were not comp-enacted as per there initial Agreement. In such cases they were generally working for a predetermined period of time that was ranging between four to seven years and in return remunerated with residence and some other freedom dues.
In the early 1960s the first black Africans were allowed to Virginia where they were to work as servants with their remuneration being considered. The idea was not long lived as the Massachusetts brought in the law of slavery. Besides the freedom that the Africans were supposed to enjoy was as well withdrawn. This was basically as a result of the increase in demand of labour and in respect to the cost that would be incurred for the servants. In such the landowners viewed that it would be more profitable for the black Africans to be treated as slaves so as to maximise their profitability, hence the beginning of racism.
From the definitions of the two terms, slaves had no any form of compensation that they were entitled to while the servitudes ( servants) had partial remuneration despite the harsh conditions. Jamestown was the mastermind of servitudes with their need of cheap labour. The servitudes had a specific period of time within which they were supposed to work, preferably four to seven years. There working conditions was viewed to be harsh in respect to the slaves, as some could be added more working years for either skipping work or for the women becoming pregnant was an issue of concern. Inevitably, some servants could work better than other servants and hence these were associated with the colonial elites who could help with the management and smooth running of the operations in farms.
Slaves were not entitled to any pay whatsoever in respect to what they were doing as this was generally accepted by the government. Unlike the servants who had the chance to interact and probably learn from their peers, slaves were not entitled to any form of education or anywhere that they could knowledge. The modes of punishment of the slaves were whipping, raping among other brutal beating which was arguably accepted by the sitting government. There working hours in a day was viewed to different from winter and summer season as 14 years and 15 years respectively, improvised by stono rebellion 1740s.
In conclusion both the servitudes and the slaves working condition was neither good of each other. This is evident as the servitudes would have harsh treatment just as slaves despite their ability to be remunerated with tokens of appreciation.
