Canada - the world’s second largest country. It is home to the world’s longest street, highway, and freshwater beach. Yeah, it has some of the world’s longer things in it, I suppose you could say. It also has one of the world’s longest-lasting debts, a long history of idiocy, and a long list of people without homes. The prime minister is considered a laughing-stock among the other countries; Canada is seen as weak in the shadow of the United States whom we rely heavily upon.

The nation of Canada is equipped with rolling, bountiful landscapes, a healthcare system designed to suit anyone’s needs, and humongous cities bustling with activity; however, these are also destined to be its greatest downfalls, all thanks to the government. The government of Canada is run by a man named Justin Trudeau, who is the 23rd prime minister. His intentions are good for the most part; however, he is also very selfish and too caught up in what the ‘people’ want. He once interrupted a woman giving a speech, just to correct her “mankind” into a “peoplekind,” because apparently, it’s more inclusive (Chicago Tribute). Yes, it’s 2018 and we want to be known as one of the most inclusive countries in the world, but we can’t be pulling random words out of thin air just because we can.

Canada is already known as an accepting place for the LGBT community, but we do have a bad history regarding their acceptance. For example, you could ask 100 people about Canada’s gay purge and only a handful of them would be able to tell you about it. The gay purge occurred in the 1960s when a professor from Carleton University designed a device named the “Fruit Machine.” It was designed to basically strap the subject down and show them lewd images of attractive men to see how their pupils would react to them. If they were found to be “gay,” they would be fired from their jobs (Peter Knegt, CBC). Ridiculous, right? What’s even more ridiculous is that Justin Trudeau recently offered $85 MILLION to the test subjects of this crude experiment (Chicago Tribute).

It’s okay to try to make things right, but it happened a long time ago. Instead of offering $85,000,000 to those poor old ‘gay’ men, he could have done something more useful with that money. For example, he could have donated it to the homeless people that the streets of the cities are filled with. Homelessness affects 235,000 Canadians every year, which is about 1% of the population (Raising the Roof). That may not sound like many people, but it’s a lot more than you may think. To put it into a better perspective, every 1 in 100 Canadians will experience homelessness, who or when will vary. If you have $85 million to spare for a few old men, I’m sure you can spare it for the many homeless that roam the streets of cities. You may already be starting to see a trend: if it’s too good to be true, it generally is. That brings me to my next point: the healthcare system. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fabulous system; however, one must wonder if the problems outweigh the benefits.

Most Canadians think that our healthcare system is the best in the world, but it is most definitely not. It ranks 10th out of 17 countries (Daniel Muzyka, Glen Hodgson, and Gabriela Prada), and it is easy for one to see why. The hospitals are FILLED with people who are ‘depressed’ from our harsh and unforgiving culture, as well as people who basically smoke and drink themselves into a vegetative state. My mother is a nurse, and she is presently caught up in a lawsuit because of a prostitute who fell out of bed while she was having a seizure. Oh, and who’s paying for all this? Is it the government? Yes, they are, but with the taxpayer’s money! A lot of the people being admitted to these hospitals probably don’t even pay their taxes; the government doesn’t take any money from them as they don’t have jobs. Instead, they just spend all their money on alcohol and smokes. And what is the government doing about this? Absolutely nothing, they just keep taking people’s money and paying for these selfish, non-functioning members of society.

Of course, the hospital system is amazing for many people; however, it needs to be revamped to prioritize people who may actually need help versus people who basically screwed themselves over. Canada is certainly a spectacular country with many great people and an attitude that cannot be matched by other countries; however, the government is a joke. Ever since the country was formed, there have been countless arguments and troubles between the members of parliament. We are considered a joke with other large countries, they think we live in igloos and live off of maple syrup. So I ask you, fellow Canadians, do you hate being laughed at behind our backs? Are you tired of this childish government who are good for nothing, with the exception of arguing and succumbing to the ignorant youth? Do something about it, because I hate to break it to you but America isn’t going to fix this one.
