The Difference Between High School And College
High school years and college years are the best years of a young adult’s life. These are the years that he or she learns to adapt to freedom, responsibility, and life. These are the years that students will learn who they really are, and what they want to become in life. If not taken seriously, the transition can be very difficult for some individuals. Most young adults have trouble transitioning his or her normal high school routines into a set college lifestyle. High school and college are similar, but different in various ways. In high school students are taught different strategies such as different ways to study, how to manage their time, and how to successfully take a test. These strategies are taught so that the student will be prepared when transitioning to college. The differences between the two are the hours spent in the classrooms, the freedom that students have, and the cost of textbooks.
In the state of Mississippi, high school students are required to attend class one hundred and eighty days out of the school year; however, this does not include holidays. In high school students are required to take state tests that will determine if they are eligible to pass to the next grade level. In order to attend certain college institutions, students are required to have a minimum of twelve hours a semester. Students that are in college can attend class more than twelve hours a week, if they’re trying to graduate early. These requirements are similar because they are both set for students to be eligible to get their degree.
Most young adults live with their parents during their high school years. These years are considered to be the easiest years of his or her life. Their parents are responsible for feeding them, washing their clothes, and making sure they get up for school each morning. They are not responsible for paying bills, or even car insurance. A young adult’s only responsibility in high school is to get their education and make their parents proud. College on the other hand is a whole different ball game. No one is there to wake him or her up in the morning, cook him or her breakfast, and make sure that all their homework is complete. College on the other hand, students have a lot more responsibilities and they are responsible of their consequences.
In both high school and college, textbooks are state issued based on the learning curricular. In high school textbooks are free but in college students are required to purchase a textbook from the library or their local textbook store. A student can also rent a textbook online for a cheaper price. Financial aid will in-fact help cover the cost of textbooks; however, most textbooks are very expensive. A student should be prepared to spend his or her own money to cover the costs. High school teachers and college professors both are required to assign a textbook to their students based on their subject. Students will learn that is it very important to utilize their resources and study their textbooks. Most teachers and college professors provide weekly tests that are based on chapters written in the textbooks.
I honestly think the main purpose of going to high school and college is to become more mature, responsible, and getting the proper education skills for the career that he or she wants to achieve. As this semester being my first college experience, I had learned different skills that can help me adapt to the adulthood life and my career choice. School is tiring at times, but all the hard work and the long hours put in it will pay off and the worth it.
