There are many Different ways to distinguish molecular compounds from ionic bonds. First of all, we half to talk about what these 2 bonds are. An ionic compound is defined as one or more cations paired up with one or more anions, And A molecular compounds are defined as 2 or more compounds combined together. They are very similar, and hard to distinguish apart a lot of the time, so I am going to show you how. The first way you can tell the difference is where the elements in the bods are located on the periodic table. Nonmetals are almost always on the right side of the periodic table. This means that molecular compounds always take place on the far right of the periodic table. On the contrary, cations and anions mainly are located on the left, and middle of the periodic table. This means that Ionic compounds mainly take place on the left and middle of theperiodic table. Another way you can tell the difference between ionic bonds and molecular bonds is looking at their chemical compound symbols. When you look at an atoms chemical symbols you can tell what type of compound it is by tracing the individual chemical symbols back to where they come from in the periodic table. I talked about what the significance of the location of the elements in the periodic table is. There are alot of physical differences between these two types of elements.

Typically, if you see a molecular bonding element at room temperature, it will be a gas, or some sort of loosely held together solid, and even a liquid with a lot of them resembling dry clay or sand. Alot of the time ionic compounds can be distinguished between molecular bonds by what happens when you hit them with a hammer. The difference here is that ionic compounds are malleable most of the time, and will just be distorted, and not explode into a bunch of little bits, like a molecular bond would. This doesn't happen all the time, but in most cases this applies. Another experiment you can do two distinguish the two compounds, is mix them in water, and see which one conducts electricity. Ionic compounds conduct electricity, so the compound that conducts the most electricity is ionic. Ionic compounds also Have higher melting points and boiling points compared to molecular bonds , so if you put them in a furnace, or even just on a stove to see which one boils first. Once again, there are a lot of ways you can tell the difference between ionic and molecular bonds, just from looking at them. There Are probably even more ways to do this then what I stated, But i found these to be the most efficient. Molecules are still being found and tested, and They change the definitions for certain things a lot, so It can be had to keep up a lot of the time.
