Salt has been used to keep road safe during the inclement weather for many decades. Even the salt you used while you are cooking and eating, you can use outside on the sidewalks and roads. Salt can help the roads be safer for driving. It can help the sidewalks and other surfaces to be easier to walk on. Since salt lowers the freezing point of ice, applying salt to sidewalks makes them safer for pedestrians and animals to walk on them

Salt is known to speed up the process of melting ice. When salt is added to a frozen substance, it breaks down the molecules and their ability to organize the right way in order to freeze. When molecules cannot organize correctly, the freezing process cannot happen. When salt is put on ice it breaks down into two ions. Those two ions are sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium or lithium and chloride. Since those ions are not normally in ice, they are considered foreign or strange to many things in the liquid. Salt helps lower the freezing point of water. When the freezing point of water gets lowered, it makes it harder for the ice to form because the molecules in the water cannot form like they normally would. The more salt that is put on ice, the harder it is for the ice to form. (https:// www.techtimes.com/articles-on-how-salt-melts-ice).

The more salt you put on ice, the harder it is for a surface to freeze. That is a good thing for roads that have a lot of vehicles on them. Some people mix dirt or small rocks with salt when they put it on a surface. Dirt and rocks do not help the melting point, but they help ice not to form if the temperatures get really cold. Ice is water that is frozen and stays in a solid shape. Other liquids can make ice but this report is only on ice made from water. Ice is not always clear because it can have tiny bubbles trapped in it. Ice normally freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit or 0 degrees Celsius. There are many forms of ice such as hail, sleet, freezing rain and snowflakes. These kinds of precipitation are all types of winter weather. (https:// . en.wikipedia.org/salt_%28chemistry%29)

Ice is not always a bad thing, but when it is on a sidewalk, roads or rails that trains travel on it is considered dangerous because ice makes surfaces and things very slippery and hard to walk or travel on. Ice on surfaces that people use to walk on cause many accidents and injuries. However, ice can also be used in good ways. If you add salt to ice when making ice cream, it lowers the temperature of the ice making it form the cream mixture into ice cream faster. Icey surfaces can also be used for ice skating and other sports, such as ice hockey and ice fishing.

Water freezes in many forms. Such as in the ice that forms on a surface and ice that falls from the sky. Snow, sleet and hail are kinds of ice that fall from the clouds. When water falls from the cloud and freezes on a frozen surface, it is called freezing rain. When water freezes, it expands in volume. If water freezes after it goes in a crack of a surface on a road or sidewalk, it causes the surface to be very dangerous. The process is called frostheaving. Frozen water can also cause pipes to freeze and burst. (https:// . en.wikipedia.org/ionic-bonding)

Ice normally floats on water. When a body of water freezes, it also freezes the waterlife in the water. Thin ice allows things like algae, bacteria and other organisms to be a source of food for larger animals that depend on this kind of food to survive. Algae and bacteria can survive in frozen water so fish and other waterlife can survive if they do not freeze when the water freezes. Some waterlife live deeper in the body of water when colder temperatures arrive.

There are different kinds of salt. The elements that make up the different kinds of salt are located on the Periodic Table. The Periodic Table is a table that shows chemical elements by their atomic number. Their atomic number is determined by their electrons and the chemicals properties. The Periodic Table was first published in 1869 by Dimitri Mendelecv. The table has 18 columns and 7 rows. The rows are called periods. Sodium, magnesium, potassium, lithium and calcium are all included on the Periodic Table. Chloride is the common element in each of the salts. Salts come in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. Yellow, green, orange, red, blue, purple and other colors, are all common colors for the different kinds of salt.

Another word for an electron is an ion. The size of it is smaller than a period. An ionic compound has the interaction that happens in ionic bonding. The atoms that have received one or more electrons are positively charged. The electrons that have lost one or more electrons are negatively charged. When the positive and negative electrons transfer between the atoms, it is called electro valence. This process happens when mixing up the salt. Compound salt is considered an ionic compound. Ionic compounds control electrons in a solution. They are usually in a solid state. Ionic compounds normally have high melting points. When ionic compounds are in a solid state, they form lattice structures. These structures have two main features to figure out their lattice structures, the relative charge of the icon and their size. The structure for salt is determined this way. Another kind of bonding is covalent bonding. In this kind of bonding atoms are rounded by sharing and trying to keep stable the compounds. A kind of simple salt has been used to keep roads from becoming dangerous for a long time because salt slows down the freezing process. When salt breaks down or dissolves it forms to other ions. For example, for sodium chloride, one ion is sodium and the other ion is chloride. These two ions are considered foreign things in water. Because these are foreign things in water, it pushes the molecules away from each other. (https:// en.wikipedia.org/ionic-bonding)

Magnesium chloride is very soluble in water. It is found in sea water. Magnesium chloride is used mostly for dust control and road stabilization during icy weather. It is also found in fire extinguishers. Some people think that using Magnesium chloride on roads leads to cleaner air and better safety on the roads, especially when used on icy roads. Salt also affects the health of animals. Animals have salt cravings and can tolerate high levels of salts. Magnesium Chloride helps to stop ice from sticking to pavement and other surfaces. Magnesium chloride is not flammable. It is made up of two chemicals, magnesium and chloride. Both elements are found on the Periodic Table. The chemical abbreviation for magnesium is Mg. The chemical abbreviation for chloride is Cl. Chloride is also used for making tofu from soymilk. In Japan, it is sold as white powder. Magnesium chloride is bitter tasting. It is also found in high levels in tomato and some pepper plants. Very high magnesium chloride levels are found in the Dead Sea. The compound helps to form coral, clams and other invertebrates. The compound can be used in animals. It can also be found in soil, as a supplement.

Lithium chloride is a compound made up of lithium and chlorine. Both elements are found on the Periodic Table. The scientific abbreviation for lithium is Li. Chloride’s abbreviation is Cl. The compound’s scientific abbreviation is LiCl. This compound is not used for melting of frozen precipitation. It can have extremely bad effect when a person is exposed to it. Lithium chloride has been used to keep help some medical conditions. If someone has a medical condition called bipolar disorder, they could have taken medication that contained lithium chloride. At one time people thought the compound also called lithium salt helped the central nervous system, but it was also thought to seriously harm it. At one time seven decades ago, lithium chloride was used as a salt substitute. It was stopped because of the bad things it caused. The compound is labeled now labeled as a toxic substance. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/lithium-chloride )

Potassium chloride is water soluble and when it is used properly it is beneficial in ways. Potassium chloride is made up of potassium and chloride. Both elements are located on the Periodic Table. Potassium’s scientific abbreviation is K. Chloride’s scientific abbreviation is Cl. The compound’s chemical equation is KCl. It is not used for melting ice or other frozen precipitation. This compound is mostly used in making fertilizer. Potassium levels affects plant growth. It is water soluble and when used properly it is not toxic. KCl is also used when food is processed. It helps people who are going or are in cardiac arrest. This compound is also in the mixture of other chemicals when someone is executed. One of the most popular uses of KCl is as a water softener. It can be used as a salt substitute but it tastes bitter. The human body does need potassium, but too much is not good for the body.

Calcium chloride is a compound of calcium and chlorine. Calcium’s scientific abbreviation is Ca. Chloride’s scientific abbreviation is Cl. The chemical formula of calcium chloride is CaCl. This compound has no color and is very much soluble in water. This kind of salt is used for melting ice and other frozen precipitation. Calcium chloride is used both in the solid and liquid state. It does not have a bad effect on plants and soil. It is also used in dehumidifiers in homes and in other places because it absorbs the moisture in the air. The compound helps a lot of dust from coming off the surface after it has been put down. This helps drivers see more clearly in bad weather. This compound is used in swimming pools too, because it keeps the water hard. By keeping the water hard, it prevents the concrete from being eroded and other things from growing in the pool like harmful algae and bacteria. (https:// www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcium Chloride)

Sodium chloride is made up of sodium and chloride. Both elements are found on the Periodic Table. Sodium’s scientific abbreviation is Na. Chloride’s scientific abbreviation is Cl. The compound’s formula is NaCl. This compound is known as common salt as well as other names such as rock salt, saline and table salt and many more. White salt, like sodium chloride, has many uses and benefits. It is also used in sea water to help the chemicals balanced. This kind of salt help preserve foods too. Sodium chloride is also used in the fluids when drilling for oil. This kind of salt is added to some kinds of soil to make it safer and healthier for growing plants.

As a whole, salt slows the shifting of the soil. However, too much salt is very harmful to things because it can cause corrosion or promote rusting on bridge joints and causing rust on metal surfaces. Too much salt can be very harmful to people and to the environment.

Environmentalists and health experts are always looking for ways to make sure that the types of salt and the amounts of salt used are not harming people or our earth. The different kinds of salts are used for different things. Some salts are safer for the environment than others. But there is one thing that is true for all of the kinds of salts, too much salt is not good. (https:// www.techtimes.com/articles-on-how-salt-melts-ice)
