Definition
Dieting is an approach that aims to mostly make people lose their additional weight. With doing this, dieting also provides a healthy life standard to people. Yhe purpose of the healthy diet is to make children and teenagers to have a normal growth and developmental improvement and being able to sustain all the neccessities for the daily things that organs must do (Akyol, 2008). Dietitians are the people who suggest people to have which type of diet they should have in order to achieve their “healthy life standard” goals.
This job is needed in our society because people are always confused about what they should eat, how much do they need to do exercise in their daily routines. Of course, dieting is not only limited by losing weight. Othe objective is, providing thin people to gain some number of kilos they need to have to achieve a better life standard. Because these people have a tendency to have some health issues, experts like nutritionists and dietitians are doing researches and trying to prepare a most appropriate diet plan to the individual. On the other hand, there are also people who are satisfied with their current situation and maintain their fitness by continuing to have a diet plan like they used to do before.
Compare/Contrast
People would like to be happier with doing various types of dieting. In this writing, two basic concepts of dieting, which are Atkins diet and the Dukan diet will be introduced. There are several differences between the Atkins diet and the Dukan diet. Atkins diet is a concept that aims to be healthier by not taking much carbohydrates. However, the person can intake whatever fat and protein s/he wishes. There is no limitation. In this concept, a person also neeeds to determine which insulin level is more suitable for himself. Because this diet needs to work with low carbohydrates, as a result of not taking sufficient carbohydrates, the body will react by burning more calories than other diets. In other words, this diet plan will probably lead to ketosis. The ketogenic diet is not typically offered to adults with epilepsy due to the significant lifestyle alterations needed for its use (Kossoff, 2008).
On the other hand, Dukan diet, which is designed by French nutritionist and dietitian Pierre Dukan, aims to plan the life schedule as our primitive-hunter gatherer ancestors do. Unlike the Atkins diet, people using this type of diet are allowed to eat as much as they like as long as they eat 100 foods which are composed of 72 animal sourced and 28 plant sourced. Yet, there are still discussions about the benefits of it. The benefits of low carbohydrate, high protein diets, like Dukan diet are well documented, whereas reported adverse effects are none in literature (Freeman, 2014). Dukan diet also includes daily exercises which can be changed in which phase the individual in.
Opinion
In my point of view, the Dukan diet is more preferable when it compared with the Atkins diet. Because as we look at the past, to our primitive-hunter gatherers life time, we can not see much overweight people as wee see in today. Hunting and gathering was very successful and until 12,000 years ago all humanity lived this way (Lee, 1999).
There had not seen many illnesses at that time as they ate enough, drunk enough and exercised daily. Without any doubt, today’s world makes human lazy. With the improvements in technology, people do not need to walk in order to get their meal. Evaluators have criticized the Dukan diet for being difficult to follow and inconveinent (Nordqvist, 2017). Furthermore, Dukan diet includes the assumption that consuminglots of protein will help people lose weight because the person will feel full and will not intend to eat any other food, so s/he will continue to eat whatever s/he needs to do. With obeying the rules of the diet, he will need to drink so much waterand this will enable people to lose their weights easily.
To conclude, although the Dukan diet method is very difficult to practice, especially in this era, if it can be done in an efficient way, people will probably be healthier than they will be with doing Atkins diet. Because we are eating lots of unhealthy foods, I olny can believe in our ancestors “way of living”.
