An Argument Against the Reputation of the Pit Bull
Would one consider owning a pit bull? Of the 69% of our population, one-fifth of those want to ban pit bulls. Numerous misconceptions have been spread about this and other breeds and thought to be dangerous at best. Quite the opposite is true. Despite what many people believe, the pit bull breed can be a wonderful companion.
The biggest myth that has spread for years is that their jaw's lock. There is no breed of dog that has the characteristics physically that would allow their jaws to lock up. Another false rumor is that they are dangerous. The Center for Disease Control released a study that 72% of dog-related bites were from non-pit bull type breeds. The Rottweiler and Doberman pinscher have a higher bite rate. Inconceivable stereotypes are not reliable or expertly proven. (“Pit Bulls - Dog Bite-Related Scientific Studies,” 2013)
According to PITBULLINFO.ORG, 60% of pit bull type dogs are misidentified and are a mixed breed with less than 50% DNA. This is the top reason for inaccurate statistics. pit bull is not a specific breed but an expression bordering on a physical appearance. The appearance of a muscular dog with a big head is often the go-to term when describing this type of dog.
They are loving companions that exist in many households. Outside of being part of the family, they have also been extraordinary service dogs, efficient K9 police dogs, and even therapy dogs. They are known for their loyalty and eagerness to please according to an organization that certifies service dogs. They are strong enough to pull a wheelchair if needed and loyal enough to comfort those with emotional distress. (“Can a Pit Bull Be a Service Dog?”)

Many years ago, the pit bull was responsible for herding cattle and guarding livestock against wild animals and protecting families against thieves shortly before the Civil War.
Pit bulls have a lifespan of nearly 16 years. Their grooming is minimal as they are short hair dogs. Since they are very athletic, they make great dogs to exercise with.
