The two different types of groups are known as formal and informal groups. While formal groups include organizational structure, informal groups are not organizationally determined (Robbins and Judge, 2019). Thus said, social identity theory proposes that individuals have an emotional stake in whether their group fails or succeeds. When people feel that that their group is superior to other people’s group is defined as ingroup favoritism (Robbins and Judge, 2019). An example of this is religion, all religions feel that their group is the “saved group” while any outgroup is a wrong faith. In a group role perception is a view of how the role is supposed to be played while role expectation is how it is believed to be done (Robbins and Judge, 2019). I found it interesting how closely norms and conformity are linked. Based on experiment that showed how a person individual will give wrong answers on purpose because they desire acceptance by a group (Robbins and Judge, 2019).

Therefore, if a groups acceptable norm is incorrect this can create bad habits which can mislead people to think what they are doing is correct. It’s interesting to read about a possibility to deviant workplace behavior be caused by employers trying to become more efficient by increasing employee workload (Robbins and Judge, 2019). In our day and age organizations are competing to do more with less. In the end I feel this will have a catastrophic effect on an organizations reputation and success. It will make it harder for that organization to attract talent because of how they treat their employees. Understanding Work Teams The difference between a work group and work team has always been interchange for me. The biggest differentiator between the two is how a work team is more purposeful and show have positive synergy (Robbins and Judge, 2019). I feel that my work team fits the criterion, but I now see how in the past I have been in work groups. Learning about the types of teams is very eye opening because this can lead to a successful project. The ability to correctly form a team based on what is need it vital to get the accurate results. Creating efficient teams is crucial to the overall team’s ability to succeed.

As an Account Executive I for a team with different distributors in order to grow business share at end user accounts. It is important for me to evaluate my partner on all the different factors that lead to a successful team before we make joint calls. Communication I learned about the five key functions that communication serves organizations: management, feedback, emotional sharing, persuasion, and information exchange (Robbins and Judge, 2019). I learned about the grapevine which has caused me extreme frustration in my work career. I have found that when downward communication doesn’t go well all that offsite employees can rely on is the grapevine which is never good. In this chapter I learned about when to choose communications methods to be effective (Robbins and Judge, 2019). In the past this was something I struggled with, but I seem to be getting a better hang of it now that I have a couple years under my belt.
