The Foundation Of Learning In High School And College

“It’s time for me to step out of the purgatory between my teenage years and adulthood and take some responsibility for my life.” (Drew C. Appleby, 2014) Drew Appleby has worked in higher education and academics for over 40 years and has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to teaching, advising, mentoring, and service. High school and college have some similarities, but have far more differences. When students step out of the cushy high school hallways of their teenage years and into the fast paced, independent college life, many of them are in for quite a shock. Not only are students about to taste independence for the first time, but they are also going to feel what accountability and inner growth feel like in this new adult stage of their academic journey.

Time Management

In high school, a student’s time is mostly structured by parents, teachers, coaches, and administrators. Students are expected to follow rules and established boundaries to manage their time properly. In college, students must learn to manage their own time. They are responsible for getting to class on time, completing assignments, and studying. “Professors may not formally take roll, but they are still likely to know whether or not you attended, especially at smaller colleges where they will get to know you.” (Kings College, 2019) Some college students hold down part time or even full time jobs on top of their studies. Using time management tools and proper planning is very helpful.

Teaching Styles

Teachers mostly present material to students in high school, giving them the exact information they will need for assignments or exams. They will present information to help students understand the material in the book and remind students of incomplete work. College professors may lecture a large portion of the time with the assumption that students have done the required reading and research beforehand. Professors expect students to read, save, and revisit the course syllabus, being mindful of due dates and expectations. “Guiding Principle: You are responsible for your academic life and for seeking out the resources you need to be successful.” (Macalester, 2019)

Class Time

High school students spend on average six hours per day, thirty hours per week in class. The school year often lasts from late August to early June, with a short winter and spring breaks. High school students then have the summer off. College students can spend anywhere from ten to twenty hours per week in class. Some students may take classes online while working as well. Others may take only day or night classes, depending on the type of school or degree they are completing. Though college students generally spend less time in the classroom or lecture hall, it is imperative to complete homework, study, and review class notes to be successful.

Conclusion

In conclusion, high school is where students develop a foundation for learning and are encouraged to prepare for their journey onto higher education. Though high school and college have similarities, they are very different when researched more closely. High school students still have parents, teachers, and other outside entities guiding them and making sure they stay on track. College students must adjust quickly to an independent style of learning and studying. “Before you begin your freshman year in college, prepare yourself to be challenged by harder work, more work, and work that must be completed in a shorter period of time.” (Drew C.
