Social Media has had a great effect on Society. From texting to posting, it has taken a toll on many people in the world today. Social Media has become an important tool for today’s society. It creates the opportunity for people to interact online with others. This can be great for specific situations, but for the most part, it is truly an obstacle for real-life interactions. What has truly been effected today are social skills, which includes friendships and relationships. The lack of social skills can lead to many downsides when growing up. Yes, there are upsides to social media, but would you truly want to be liking posts and making hashtags when you could be interacting with others face to face?

Social life plays a huge role in the maturity in someone’s life as they grow up. Just a couple of years ago, many social apps that we are using today didn’t even exist. Of-course there was Myspace and other forums you could communicate on, but there was not nearly as many as there are today. They could be online friends, but typically they were people they already knew in person. Teens today are told they are “friends” with someone just because they friended them on social media. This shows a lack of intimacy in the relationship because they have never met up close and personally. This is lonesome compared to an original friendship, where the two peers share that special bond that cannot be shared through likes and comments.

Texting yours “friend” saying that you truly care about them is not the same as saying you care about them to their face. You might not ever hang out with these people, but social media is “enough” for some people to feel wanted and not alone. This could mean that you might not leave the house often and not being involved in any form of social activity. Not only can social media effect friendships, but it can also effect and maybe even harm relationships.

Social media has allowed teens to find others that they might be attracted to physically, but not mentally. Say someone is scrolling through Instagram and they find a profile that attracts them. They instantly like their post or send a message to that person. They might text some flirty messages back and forth, but they do not get to truly know who the person is on the inside. The intentions of either person cannot be valid in this situation. Messaging allows someone to show only what they want the other person to see. Maybe this situation could be work and a couple of days later, they might still be talking. This is great, but one of them might have their doubts. Does this person like me or are they just using me? Unhealthy thoughts can circle through your mind leading to a decrease in well-being.

Texting can affect a person in many ways, but emotionally is a huge effect. You cannot truly tell the emotion of someone through messaging and liking other’s photos. You might think something is going well, but in reality, that person does not see the bond that you have seen. This lowers their emotional capacity. If you are friends with someone online, you cannot truly feel empathetic or compassion for that person. Some people may not realize, but social interaction can help build the skills that you will use for your entire life.

Talking through social media not only affects relationships, but communication as well. Throughout the years, texting has taken over many people’s lives and it is affecting their way of speaking. For example, in today’s time, peers are sending texts using abbreviations such as “ttyl”, “omg”, or even just a simple “k”. Syntax and grammar are ruined completely and they are forgetting about how to actually talk to a human being.

Social media is great in some aspects. You can get the latest gossip and news about what is going on in the world today. You can reach out to family members that are too far away to communicate with face-to-face. It even allows us to look up meaningful information. All of these amenities are amazing for others, which is why social media could be used, but maybe just minimizing it can make a huge difference. Just think to yourself, which is better? Making a friend online and ruining communication skills, or growing communication skills with talking to someone in person and they could completely change your life?
