Description of workplace incident

It is the matter of year 2017. My friend and I were on nursing duty in same medical -surgical ward in Govt. rajindra hospital, India during our internship. This hospital was outdated, understaffed and unhygienic. So, one day, in the evening duty, my friend was to give injection to HIV patients. So, she had to wear gloves for that. She asked registered staff nurse for gloves, but staff nurse did not provide gloves due to insufficient ward inventory. She forced her verbally to give injection without using safety precautions (gloves). Accidently, her finger pricked by needle. On this, staff nurse ignored her and did not feel necessary to tell her about prophylaxis against this infectious disease and helping her to deal with this incident.

Effect of incident on workplace

Because of incident, I was shocked on negligence, unethical and nonprofessional behavior of staff nurse. Furthermore, other interns who were on duty, at that time, were also scared by the rude conduct of staff nurse. By doing this, she lowered the nursing profession standard in front of patients and doctors.

Violation of employee rights

There are two employee rights violated as result of incidence:

a) Freedom from harassment: According to Canadian Human Right Commission “harassment is any unwanted physical or verbal behaviour that offends or humiliates you”. So, in this incident, rude and uneducated behavior of staff nurse harassed her.

b) The Canada labour code: It covers workplace health and safety which was also violated. As, staff nurse did not provide gloves to employee for giving injection to HIV patient and result in injury to employee which shows unsafe and unhealthy environment. Organizational gaps in the workplacea) Hierarchy orientated culture: This culture focused on achievement and “getting the job done”. In the hospital, nurse focus was on work done not on employee safety and demands.

c) Unhealthy and unsafe work environment which result in employee injury.

d) Less facilities like less inventory and outmoded environment like no strict rule to follow standard precautions in the workplace.

Intervention and prevention of incident

From the human resource practitioner’s point of view, following are the interventions and prevention methods can be used to close organizational gap:

a) Employee engagement results in positive organizational culture which gives rise to favorable company results and its success.

b) Promoting health and safety awareness program.

c) As human resource practitioner knows everything about workplace. So, he can advise the manager about good working condition.

Ways to measure incidence occurrence

After the implementation of above interventions, change in number of incidence can be measured by following methods:

a) Hierarchy oriented culture: If this culture is noted in the workplace then the number of incidence would decrease as it focuses on efficiency, stability and “doing things right”

b) Reduce incidence of occupational injury.

c) Increased employee engagement.

Importance of human resource management in workplace

a) Human resource monitors organizational culture and performance of employee.

b) Human resource management is concern with overall hiring of workforce.

c) It also concerned with maintenance occupational health and safety with the collaboration of manager and line manager.

d) Human resource management ensures the effective working relationship in workplace.

Conclusion

I have learnt a lot from this experience that knowledge of human rights like freedom from harassment and legislation related to workplace health and safety is very crucial while working in any organization as a employee. I attainted that success of any organization depend on type of organizational culture.
