As a single mother who couldn't find a steady job, she had a hard time supporting herself and LeBron. They often had to move from home to home in Akron. Due to the difficult conditions, James had to live through in his early life, his mother felt it would be best if LeBron lived with someone else living in better conditions. So, Gloria decided Frank Walker should be the one to take care of him. This was the start of a big chapter in LeBron's life as Frank is the man who introduced him to the game of basketball.
Frank got him into basketball in only fifth grade. He later played Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball for the Northeast Ohio Shooting Stars. The team enjoyed success on a local and national level, led by James and his friends Sian Cotton, Dru Joyce III, and Willie McGee. The group dubbed themselves the 'Fab Four' and promised each other that they would attend high school together. In a move that stirred local controversy, they chose to attend St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, a private Catholic school with predominantly white students.
Freshman/Sophomore year
'The King' already started to dominate his freshman year on the Varsity team. He averaged 21 points and 6 rebounds. The team was lead to a record of 27-0. As a sophomore, he helped lead his team to an astonishing 26-1 record and another state championship. LeBron was a star. Everyone wanted to see him play. For some home games, the team even had to play at the University of Akron in order to meet the demands of the fans that wanted to watch him. During his senior year, he ran into a few issues with the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA). On his 18th birthday, his mother bought LeBron a Hummer H2. She secured a loan from LeBron's future earnings in the NBA in order to afford it. According to OHSAA, any gifts over the price of $100 as a reward for athletic performance is prohibited. But, James was later cleared from this claim since he received this gift from a family member. Later in the season, he was given 2 jerseys with a total worth of $845 from a store in exchange that he would pose for pictures. The association saw this as a violation of their rule and he was stripped from being able to play high school sports. He later appealed the ruling. The penalty was dropped down to a 2 game suspension. The first game back from the suspension, he dropped a career-high 52 points.
