How Artists Can Finally Get Paid In The Digital Age
The video being reviewed is about a talk titled “ How artists can (finally) get paid in the digital age” presented by Jack Conte on the 30th of August 2017. In this talk, the speaker outlines how making money and trying to live as a musician in the newly discovered internet world back in 2007 was not respected by anyone. artists can be valued and appreciated in the future with the advancement of the technology.
I strongly agree that artists should not give up just because they don’t earn enough for themself or get enough recognition on any media sites. In this talk, the speaker talks about how the internet has affected music and any art industries. The speaker supports his idea by bringing his audience back where artists use conventional ways of turning a performing art into money and being a creative person in a creative career was abnormal at that time, even when there were an increase number of people who uploads and puts up their creative work online were starting to be in a competition.
Next, he compared to the artists these days where the internet has matures, and we have more sites to upload creative work, it has made it undeniably easy for creative people to earn money and to get recognition at the same time. Firstly, I agree how earning money through internet, more specifically using patreon is a good thing for artists and creative people to pursue their path further and to get recognition, and an income at the same time. Just like what Brent Knepper said “In this small network designed to save struggling creatives, the money has still concentrated at the top”. Patreon is pretty similar to any other crowdfunding sites such as Kickstarter, it allows users to set up their own profiles where fans around the world can support their work, either through monthly donations or donations per project from the artist. Nieves (2016). Patreon helps artists to get supported from their own community and to help them to reach a step closer to their dream. However I think that there are still many other ways for creative people to earn money online other than patreons.
As the internet matures, it has helped musicians when producing music to be more accessible and more affordable when there are artists recording and working in their home. Producing music has also become more accessible and more affordable with some artists recording work in their home, or hiring out a recording studio for a day. Harrison (2014). Today, musicians and singers around the world now have control over their own career in music. They are able to produce their own music, upload it to the internet and they promote it accordingly based on the artist. However I think that there are still many other ways for creative people to earn money online other than patreons.
