Effects Of Growing Up With a Single Parent and How It Can Affect Your Life

Growing up in a single parent household can affect your life in many ways, a few examples includes how you view your relationships, how you carry yourself, and especially your future. Half of my existence I grew up in a single parent household and I know what it means to provide for 3 kid with one income. Watching my parents getting a divorce seemed normal at the time but as the years went by, I started to notice a huge difference in the life of me and my siblings even my mother.

Most of the time trying to be the dad and mom for the family can get very frustrating looking back at what my mother had to go through being that my father moved out of state and was visiting once in a while. Our grandmother was a great help most of the time when my mom needed it. I think what affected me the most was how I view my relationships because of my parent’s situation. We were this happy family and a divorce never crossed my mind I thought that my parents are going to stay together till the end of time but in some instances, it’s better for each to go their separate ways. When I get into a relationship, I ponder do I really want this relationship? or I’m I going to whine up like my mom and dad and children grow up in a single parent household like I did. In my opinion I do not think that children should grow up with one parent, I feel as though they lose a bond with the other parent that is far off. I grew up by a strong woman and my father was not around for half of my life and I definitely lost that bond that most females have with their fathers this made me feel hurt more and more as the years went by .

Living in a single parent household I learned managing your money is key if you ever want anything nice. Me and my sibling didn’t always have the latest clothes, shoes, electronics, toys growing up, but we were so grateful to have everything we needed. Through it all I learned that sometimes you must go without certain things so your children can have the better things in life. When you have mostly just one parent you learn to appreciate the little things in life. When you grow up in a single parent house you must work hard to achieve your dreams and goals. Children that have both parents in their life I feel as though they don’t have to put in as much work as to someone who only has one because they are more financially stable. I am not saying that people from single parent households can’t reach their goals but it’s much harder for them to do it.

Most often when you come from a single parent home most children don’t attempt to attend college or start and take a long break from school because they’ll rather help the parent with the bills. Most kids that do enter into collage usually drop out within the first year, because the financial burden on the family I took a long 3-year brake from collage just to help out and provide for myself.
