Drug Testing Is Mandatory at Christian Brothers High School

Drug testing is the examination, given by an organization, of an individual to detect if that party has done any drug. Forms of drug testing include an examination of urine, breath, saliva, sweat, blood, and hair. It initially begins with a note excusing the student to the office of administrations. Upon arrival, the student is instructed to have a seat where the faculty then cuts a stripe of his hair. Next, the hair is put into an envelope that will later be mailed for further diagnosis. Drug testing is something that should continue to exist.

One might refute mandatory drug testing and say that it limits the individual and is expensive. Also, individuals who test positive after a drug test are typically shunned by other classmates, which creates a problem among the comradeship of the school. To that, I say doing a drug is a choice. Whether it be from personal choice or external pressure, it can be avoided. If one were to do a drug, he should be responsible for all consequences that should follow. That is why drug testing should continue to be done at any school. Firstly, it encourages students to think before they act, which builds the trait of responsibility within the individual. For example, if I were to do a drug and later tested for it, that would make me look completely irresponsible for my actions. Had I refused to take that drug, I would not only be responsible for that beneficial action, but others would not scorn me.

Another reason why drug testing should be mandatory in school is that it promotes a healthy, safe, and supportive learning environment where students can learn and strive for their maximum ability. Without the distractions of drugs, students are proven to perform better because it eliminates the chance for substance abuse or even addiction. For instance, if a student pressured another into doing a drug with them, this increases the chance for a domino effect to take place. After multiple uses of a drug, this can negatively impact a student’s health. With drug testing, it adds a sort of moderation that controls what a student takes and does.

This brings me to my final point which is that mandatory drug testing adds another reason to confront peer pressure, which is the reason why most students take drugs in the first place. With this reason in mind, it gives students another reason why doing drugs can be detrimental to themselves and others. The punishment of testing positive on a drug test can also be another reason why students refuse drugs. Sorts of punishment include suspension and even expulsion if that were his second violation. If that drug were to enhance any physical performance for a student-athlete, it could result in his lose of participation for a season or complete withdrawal from that team.

In conclusion, drug testing is something that should continue to exist. Reasons why include promotion of responsibility in that individual, dedicates students to perform at their full potential and instills a fear of punishment within that person.
