“A Dog is a Man's Best Friend” is a phrase that many individuals, especially dog lovers often say to another person when talking about dogs. However, I firmly believe that the same thing can be said about cats. This is because cats are great loyal companions that establish close relationships with their owners. This conveys my belief that cats are beneficial to their owners as taking care of a cat has a positive effect on their owners' mental health and wellbeing.
As a cat owner myself, I have come to acknowledge the beneficial effects that my cat has on my mental health. I often feel less stressed and more mentally composed when spending time with my cat, especially after a long day of school. Research conducted by “Cats Protection and the “Mental Health Foundation” found that 87% of individuals who owned a cat felt it had a positive impact on their wellbeing, while 76% said they could cope with everyday life much better as a result of having their cat accompany them. Furthermore, the act of playing with a cat or even petting them can have a positive effect on a person's mental health, as playing and petting a cat can make a person content. As a result of interacting with a cat, it helps relieve stress, anxiety and can make a person calm since all the focus is on the cat and nothing else.
An experience that allowed me to develop this specific belief was when my family and I adopted our first cat, Chloe, not so long ago. The first couple of months that I spent raising her was when I witnessed the benefit our cat had on my family’s mental health. Our family had become happier by simply having her present in our household. While spending time with Chloe, we all grew a strong connection with her by playing with and taking care of her. Not to mention, having her rely on us, and show affection helped elevate my family’s mental health positively. Furthermore, this belief was also reinforced with my cousin who adopted a cat a few years ago. I’ve noticed a change in her attitude and personality when she is around her cat, as she tends to become happier.
In conclusion, cats and dogs make wonderful pets for a variety of different reasons but it is quite evident that cats, in particular, will make a difference in the lives of their owners. From helping to reduce stress and anxiety, and providing comfort when needed, make cats the ideal pet. Thus, based on my experience with Chloe, I strongly believe cats are highly beneficial to an individual’s mental health.
