Original Creation Myth

Long ago the Goddess of Beginnings gave birth to two sons, the first she named Surya and the last Shyam. Surya and Shyam were very close at first, but as they grew older they began to grow apart. Shyam was handsome and strong – he was looked up too by all his peers; Surya was a genius, he knew everything there was to know but he was very reserved and wasn’t well known throughout his homeland. Surya wanted to prove himself; he wanted to do something that Shyam had never done, something brilliant and wild. Surya spent many days locked up in his dwellings, formulating his plan. When Surya finally emerged he went to his father to ask his permission to carry out this plan, and his father, after a few hours of careful thought and intense persuasion from Surya, agreed.

Surya gathered the soil of his homeland into his palm, and with both hands he compressed and molded it into a sphere. He threw his arms up into the air, tossing the sphere of soil into the Cosmos, were it grew and grew into a land which he later named Earth. Surya leapt to his land and looked it over carefully; his land would need habitants but how should he make them? Finally, Surya drew blood from his wrist and from that blood he made man, and from the man’s blood he made woman to keep the man company and to produce new men. Surya named these beings humans, the humans would become the top of the food chain, they would control and make their own destinies. The humans would need many things to survive, Surya decided, so he rested for awhile before beginning again.

He wiped his hand across his forehead, and slung the sweat onto the ground, creating the great oceans and rivers of Earth that would hydrate and sustain his humans. He inhaled deeply and blew out across the land, creating the winds that would cause the ocean currents and provide relief from the heat. From his flesh he created raccoons, rabbits, bears, sheep, and other animals for the humans to feed on; but these animals would need to eat too, so Surya used the hair from his arms to create the grass and foliage that the animals would live on. Surya scraped off part of his fingernail and used that to make herbs and medicines to keep the humans healthy. Finally, Surya took two boulders in his hands and rubbing them together created sparks which drew together to form the sun in the sky. Satisfied with his work Surya left his land to return to his home.

Surya was drained when he leapt back to his home and proceeded to go straight to bed for a few hours of sleep, which he defiantly deserved. What Surya didn’t know, however, was the news of his grand creation had already spread widely. Shyam was not necessarily angry when he heard of his older brothers doings, he was more agitated at the thought of his brother attempting to outdo him; he was after all the best of the best – right? It was when the Gods and Goddess began to converse about how magnificent and clever Surya was did Shyam get angry – he had not expected the limelight to actually leave him to shine on his brother.

Shyam, caught up in his moment of loathing, stomped off to his brothers “Earth”, he would not be outdone – it simply wasn’t an option. When Shyam saw the source of the rumors his face fell slack, he would have never guessed his brother capable of the creation of so many diverse creatures. Shyam’s eyes darkened and his jaw clenched, he ripped up an herb, used to heal the sick, and let his evil and hate drain into it. The herb turned black and Shyam returned it to the ground, it would be a poison to kill all who mistakenly ate it. He then found the bear and wolf and whispered menacing words into their ears, their teeth sharpened and they faces grew sinister. The rabbits and deer, who were once their friends, were now their prey. Last Shyam breathed over the land, and suddenly all was still and the temperature dropped below freezing, killing the plants which the animals survived off of.

Satisfied with his work Shyam was fixing to leave when, with a flash, his brother appeared beside him. Surya, unable to comprehend why his brother would do such a horrid thing to his brainchild, struck his brother with his sword, and so begun the brothers last fight. The brothers, who were so evenly matched in ability, continued to fight for days. On the fourth day a particularly fierce strike from one of the boys sparked off the others sword, and with a blast of light Shyam disappeared. It is said that when the swords hit one another the sparks created another world, for the repugnant and malicious to dwell in the afterlife. It is also believed that Shyam left to rule this new world, still resentful of his brother’s accomplishment and newfound popularity. When Shyam mysteriously disappeared, Surya quickly set out to return the balance to his Earth then Surya left Earth to return to his home, but he still reigns over his creations to this day.
