The True Meaning of Valentines Day
The infamous day of businesses capitalizing on love letters and roses, such a beautiful thing. Well, until unwanted poems are thrown away and dead roses are scattered along the roads. But enough with that, love is in the air and people are getting together from left to right. Dreams come true at the start of the month when crushes become significant others.
Only to last until February the 15th comes along, when it’s revealed they only got together to freeload off of each other for Valentine’s day. Ah, but what about the older couples, the couples who have been together for years. Valentine’s day must be a lot easier for them since they’ve been together longer than 14 days, right? They must look forward to this holiday since they have someone to spend it with! And by someone to spend it with, I really mean someone to compete with to see who’s the most thoughtful by buying manufactured love with three zeros slapped on the price tag.
Whether it being an oversized teddy bear or an unnecessary promise ring, gifts are always expected to top what was given last year. What’s even better is having the highlight of your day being crushed when you hear what your friend’s partner got them and wonder if yours even tried this year. Valentine’s day has become a commercial holiday that raises expectations so high for couples that it’s stressful to even think about. Rom-coms definitely aren’t helping by promoting the steps that pressures people to follow if they want to have a successful Valentine’s day. Spray on some fancy new fragrance Spend hours getting ready and putting on uncomfortable shoes to compliment the look Double check dinner reservations at a 5 star restaurant you’ll never be able to afford again.
Buy a bouquet of overpriced roses while you feel your pocket to make sure your extra special gift is still there The romance becomes forced and this holiday wasn’t intended for company’s to benefit more from this day than we do. It was meant to celebrate how much you love someone, without getting them chalky hearts and five dollar greeting cards. You don’t have to buy your love for someone who already loves you for you, not how full your bank account is. Select songs that remind you of them, that way they can listen to it whenever they want and smile knowing you thought of them to that song.
You can use Spotify, Soundcloud, Apple Music, Amazon Music or even Youtube Music if you’re desperate. You may think this’ll cost more than some box chocolates but there’s a lot of free concerts during the week of Valentine’s day that go unannounced. Some researching and planning may need to happen but it’ll be a total surprise to your partner! Most importantly The time spent together outweighs anything money can buy. Spend time with them and let them know how much they truly mean to you.
And remember, there’s 364 other days to spoil your significant other rather than just on February the 14th.
