The Media Depiction of Canada and Information About a Country
Mass media plays a big role in the development of a country and shaping the image of a country whether it is within the country or in the outer world. Newspaper, magazine, radio, television and internet are different types of broadcasting mediums through which one can learn many things about any country. Among all these mediums I believe television is the first through which I have learnt about Canada. I have observed through digital media that despite of huge cultural differences there are some values and believes that are similar in both countries.
From news I learnt about the Canada’s immigration policy that has helped thousands of Syrian refugees and has welcomed many competent immigrants from various developing nations to boost workforce in Canada every year. Infect, Canada has welcomed highest number of immigrants as compare to other western countries. Other than that Canada also welcomes thousands of students each year to provide quality education.
I have watched news and many movies in my regional language on television about the immigrants from my country that are settled in Canada. From these movies I learnt about the cultural differences between Canada and my home country. One common thing that all these movies depicted is that Canada is an equal opportunity provider and has better living standard.
Globally, Canada has presented itself as a multicultural nation where everyone has equal rights to celebrate their culture and follow their religious believes regardless of their origin. A recent example of broadcasting live translation of federal leaders debate into various indigenous languages has shown the outer world that despite being a bilingual country, Canada also respects the indigenous speakers of the country.
Digital media has also reflected Canada as a peace-loving country and global peace index shows that Canada is among top ten peace loving and safe countries to live in. Canada has no enemy among other nations and has maintained good relations with other border sharing countries.
Like every country has one sport for which the country is very passionate and takes a lot of interest, Canada shows its immense love one sports, that is hockey. Hockey is the national sport of Canada. I believe hockey is the medium through which people of diverse cultures and background come together to celebrate their love for Canada and show their patriotism.
Apart from television, nowadays internet is also a great medium to know about a country. As an international student, Canadian government websites has helped me learn about rules and regulations that an international student need to follow. Also, there are many You-tube blogs created by international student to share their experience with new students.
Overall, I can say that media help can you to evaluate a country and develop a picture in your mind without even going to that country. When I came in Canada as a student and then actually experienced, I found that the observations that I made through different mediums such as television and internet were fairly accurate.
