We need to have enthusiasm and to incorporate a multicultural philosophy in our teaching. We sometimes forget that our classrooms are made up of young people who usually know very little about their own culture or those of their classmates. Without this transformation of ourselves, any attempts at developing a multicultural perspective will be shallow and superficial. However, becoming multiculturalism person in a society that values monoculturalism is not easy. It means re-educating ourselves in several ways.

First, we simply need to learn more. We need to be involved in activities that emphasize pluralism. We also need to look for books and other materials that inform us about people and events we may know little about. We need to learn about the books not just see them as books. When we read the books with the class we need to ask our students about their perspective about what they are reading and if they have any personal knowledge of the subject. Student s will become more involved with their learning when we can bring their personal knowledge into our teaching.

Second, we need to confront our own racism and biases. It is impossible to be a teacher with a multicultural perspective without going through this process. Because we are all products of a society that is racist and stratified be gender, class, and language, among other differences, we have all internalized some negative messages in one way or another. We need to not discriminate the LGBT no matter what they are like us and they are not any different from us. We all need to accept each person for who they are.

Third, becoming a multicultural person means learning to see reality a variety of perspectives. Because we have often learned that there is only one “right answer, ” we have also developed only one way of seeing things. A multicultural perspective demands just the opposite. Reorienting ourselves in this way can be exhausting and difficult because it requires a dramatic shift in our worldview. Building upon our world view perspective, can give us a way to see and teach different perspective of life. A teacher can grow and learn from their students and array of different world views.

In conclusion we need to adapt and acknowledged the students ideas not to shy away from them. As teachers we need to build a foundation for learning for all students that each culture has an abundance of diversity that can enrich the learning environment of the classroom. The teacher can channel this knowledge into a curriculum that will help each students learn about the world around them. Diversity culture and worldview need to be part of the classroom and not just a subject in a book. Teachers have a huge responsibility of sharing lessons that include all these components.
