How Figure Skating Transformed Me and Shaped My Future
Nothing surpasses the euphoria that washes over you upon completing your meticulously prepared routine at a competition that you have ardently pursued for months. You draw in a deep breath, a smile gracing your lips, and in that moment, all the weight of expectations vanishes into thin air. Your body fills with an overwhelming sense of relief as you gracefully bow to the judges and step off the ice. The realm of figure skating has profoundly impacted my life in numerous ways. It has stirred a myriad of emotions within me, forged special bonds with others, disrupted my sleep patterns, and most importantly, it has fostered personal growth, and for that reason, I am enamored with it. I have been immersed in the art of skating for almost seven years, which accounts for almost half of my lifetime. Throughout this journey, it has imparted upon me invaluable skills and bestowed me with enduring character traits that will accompany me through the passage of time.
Above all, figure skating has elevated my self-confidence. The act of presenting myself in front of a multitude of spectators during competitions is undeniably daunting. I feel the piercing gaze of each pair of eyes as they scrutinize my every move. Not to mention the five judges and technical panel, along with the camera tracking my every skating technique for their meticulous evaluation. However, with every competition, my confidence and self-acceptance in the face of mistakes grow stronger. I embrace my failures, using them as stepping stones to propel me towards continuous improvement in my future performances. Moreover, figure skating has instilled an unwavering determination within me. I set ambitious goals that push my mental and physical boundaries, exerting my utmost efforts to achieve them. The surge of relief and elation upon successfully landing a new jump or mastering a new spin has a cascading effect, enhancing my overall skating prowess as an overwhelming surge of confidence envelops me. This newfound determination has also permeated other aspects of my life, extending its influence to my academic endeavors. My recent successful preliminary results are a testament to the determination and goal-setting prowess cultivated through my ongoing skating journey.
Skating has also been a tutor in discipline. As one would expect, there are rules and guidelines in skating that must be strictly adhered to, and, unsurprisingly, failure to do so comes with consequences. Regrettably, skaters often learn this lesson the hard way. The disappointment of seeing deductions on the score sheet due to avoidable and careless errors is disheartening. Not achieving the desired score after putting in tremendous effort fills me with remorse and frustration. Yet, I've come to accept that as human beings, perfection is elusive, and making mistakes is part of the learning process. Through careful analysis and self-critique, I learn from those errors and make the necessary corrections for future endeavors. Accepting imperfections is an essential facet of growth and development.
Another facet of my growth as an individual has been the development of leadership skills during my time spent on the ice. On Saturdays, I willingly volunteer to assist in teaching the younger children at the 'learn to skate' classes. These children, typically around the age of four, and beyond, look up to me as a role model, and it warms my heart to know that I am giving back to those who once taught me how to skate. This experience has opened the possibility of becoming a coach in the future, providing me with financial stability while pursuing higher education. Furthermore, it has bestowed upon me a sense of responsibility for others, compelling me to act swiftly and decisively in challenging situations. The commitment required for this sport has also translated into my personal life, necessitating logical and at times, difficult choices to strike a balance between social life and rigorous training. Early mornings, commencing around five AM, often impinge on time with friends and disrupt my sleep pattern. Yet, these sacrifices are willingly made, as the passion for skating and the relationships it fosters outweighs the challenges.
Throughout my journey as a skater, I have forged numerous cherished relationships. Attending competitions across the United Kingdom has afforded me the opportunity to meet and connect with new people, expanding my circle of friends. Moreover, my relationship with my coaches holds a special place in my heart. Though they may be tough on me at times, I am aware of their belief in my full potential, and their dedication to my progress motivates me to strive for excellence. Spending time with them has taught me to appreciate and respect individuals from diverse age groups, a skill that I believe will prove beneficial as I venture into the professional world.
I firmly believe that figure skating has played a pivotal role in shaping the person I am today and will continue to influence the person I aspire to be in the future. It has bestowed upon me a wealth of life skills and bestowed me with cherished memories that will forever remain etched in my heart.
