Have you ever wondered why some people keep to themselves or how others are super talkative? There are two kinds of people in the world. They are either introverts or extroverts. These two things can mainly be based on personality level, how your childhood was, and sometimes it’s just how you are born. But what are the differences between the two?

The first one is introversion, it is a basic personality style characterized by a preference for subdued and solitary experiences. Introverts do not fear or dislike others, they are not shy, nor do they like to be lonely. Simply, they enjoy being by themselves and they get more energized by their own inner life than by social events. For instance, being at a crowded party may make them feel uncomfortable, but they may enjoy more of a one-on-one in a calmer environments. There are many more extroverts than introverts in the world. In an article from Psychology Today it reads, “Certainly in the U.S. Data suggest that introverts are outnumbered by extroverts by a factor of six or seven to one.” But no one in today’s world is truly an introvert or an extrovert.

Almost everyone needs some solitude to gain most of their energy back. Just because you are an introvert does not mean that you are automatically shy. People who are shy, means, they tend to have a fear of people or social situations. Introvert people simply do not like to spend lots of time interacting with other people. However, introverts do appreciate being around people to whom they are close to them. Such as family, friends and maybe even coworkers. How they shows this is they like engaging in 'small talk”, but they also enjoy having deep, meaningful conversations. Introverts also tend to think about things before they start to talk. They like to have a full understanding of the conversation before they put an opinion or try to offer an explanation to it. There are eight traits that many people use to see if they are introverts. Those are if being around lots of people drains your energy, you enjoy solitude, you have a small group of close friends, people often describe you as quiet and may find it difficult to get to know you, too much stimulation leaves you feeling distracted and unfocused, you are very self-aware, you like to learn by watching, and finally, you are drawn to jobs that involve independence.

In contrast extroverts are very outgoing, energetic, talkative people. In an article from Psychology Today it states “They (extroverts) are thought to make up anywhere from half to three-quarters of the American population. Extroversion, as a personality trait, was first proposed by noted psychiatrist Carl Jung in the 1920s”. People who consider themselves an extrovert tend to look for crazy and social experiences that allow them to interact with others as much as possible. A person who is highly extroverted will most likely feel bored, or even anxious, when they’re made to spend too much time alone or if they are bored this can happen to them. How to tell if someone is a true extrovert they are often considered “the life of the party.”. Having a lot extroversion isn't a bad thing at all. Extroversion is a more common in the work force. Since they tend to be skilled at interacting with others. They are usually best at working at jobs with a lot of social encounters. Which in today’s world is almost every job. There are five key traits of being an extrovert, you love to talk, socializing helps you feel energized and inspired, you like to solve problems by discussing them, people describe you as friendly and approachable, and lastly you are very open and easy to get to know.

Sometimes in relationships either with friends or your significant other can be affected by these two things. On the other hand, going by the rule “opposites attract”, an introvert and an extrovert are more likely to make a happy couple then them being with the same kind. Though little problems are inevitable in this relationship, by knowing the difference between the two traits can be helpful in making it smooth sailing. But if it gets out of hand these two can turn out to be a problem. The fact is that most of us have both these personality traits in us, with one trait being more dominating than the other. Many tests have been done to find out if this true or not, and it’s continuing to this day.

So, which are you? Are you an introvert or extrovert? Me personally, I am a little more of an extrovert. Especially if I’m meeting new people. I can also be an introvert when it comes to situations, such as giving a speech to a large crowd. I believe these things in our personality makes us who we are. They also help us make decisions about life, jobs, etc.
