Did you know that 3.5% of the United States population, which equals up to about 8 million adults, identify themselves as gay, lesbian or bisexual according to. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, psychologists classified homosexuality as a from of mental illness, and number of theories on its origin had been established. During this time in age seuxal orientation is a very sensitive topic this is due to the fact that according to (Jennifer Robinson) it is a term used to refer to a person’s emotional, romantic, and sexual attraction to individuals of a specific gender. Including the fact that sexual orientation may not be the most obvious based on one’s appearance or behavior, but it includes ones emotions and how they identify themselves.

Sexual orientation is divided up into categories, such as heterosexual, homosexual and bisexual. Heterosexual is when somone is attracted to members of the opposite sex, meanwhile homosexual is when somone is attracted to individuals of one’s own sex. And bisexual is when someone is attracted to memebers of either sex. All three catergories have some type of sexual attraction, it may not be the same type but they all choose weither or not they want to act on those feelings. All humans are exposed to sexual stimuli when seeing an attractive person but most sexual arousals do not lead to sexual activity with an individual. Yet our sexual impulses and responsiveness vary in different degrees for instance petting may influance that. Petting are actions such as kissing, hugging, and caresses even when clothed to techniques that involve geneital stimulation. Petting may be done for it’s own sake as an expression of affection and a source of pleasure, and it may occur as a preliminary to coitus (Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc.).

There has been much conflict on weither or not sexual orientation is determined at birth, several people agree that it is determined at birth and others disagree. Those who oppose state that there is such a gene, known as the “Gay gene”. Fortunately, with all the emenze amount of research it can be proven that sexual orientation is not determined at birth, and that there is not such gene known as the “Gay gene”.

Based on genetic and harmonal factors all humans have similar phases when they are involved in sexual activity such as the excitement phase, which involves an increase in your blood and pulse rate. Eventually that supply of blood that was increased is brought to the surface of the body following increased skin temperature, flushing, including swelling of all distensoble body parts and a general increase in muscle tension. Genetically speaking everyone has a divergent sexual expression and it is unknow as to why. There are some rare cases where drastic genetic abnormalities can affect sexual capacity, physical appreance and my possibly effect their entire life. It is unlikely, however, that genes control the sexual orientation of normal humans in the sense of individuals being predestined to become homosexual or heterosexual (Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc.). Every normal human is born with neurophyiology that is a neccesity for the sexual response cycle, and your genetic makeup decides on your hormonal status. A hormone that affects you sexuality is androgen, which is also known as a male sex hormone and is located in the testicles. Another, hormone is estrogen which is a female sex hormone and is produced in the ovaries. Nonetheless during the early embryonic life there are neither testicles or ovaries, but instead there are two undifferentiated organs known as gonads that over a certain amount of time evolve into testicles or ovaries. In addition, to that after birth and until puberty, ovaries and testicles produce very few hormones which means there is no sexual responsiveness nor drive. Along with that explains as to why little girls and boys are similar in size and appereance. Within the article Human sexual activity it states that there was a experiment conducted, it involved removing or giving androgen to males and females, and it was porven that male homosexuals do not have more estrogen than an average male would and that their preferences cannot be altered by providing them with androgen. Hormones have no connection with the sexual orientation of humans (Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc.).

Hypothalamus and limbic system are the areas of the brain thought to be most concerned with sexual response, but no advanced 'gender core' has been identified in the human brain. The brain itself is the center of planning and command, determining what stimuli are to be interpreted as sexual and giving the rest of the nervous system correct 'orders.' As stated in the article Human sexual activity, even newborn males have penile erections, babies of both sexes seem to find pleausre in genital stimulation, and it is not till around puberty sexual intrest begins to appear.

Most of the huge variation observed in humans must be due to learning and conditioning psychological factors. As shown in (Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc.) the human infant is born simply with the ability to respond sexually to tactile stimulation. It is only later and gradually that the individual learns or is conditioned to respond to other stimuli, to develop a sexual attraction to males or females or both, to interpret some stimuli as sexual and others as nonsexual, and to control in some measure his or her sexual response. In the development of what eventually becomes adult sexual identity, therefore, the early years of life are of paramount importance. Children develop a sense of gender identity before age five, think of themselves as boys or girls, and begin to relate differently to others depending on their gender. Over practice, kids learn what behavior is being praised and what is being punished and what kind of behavior is expected of them. Furthermore, atypical sexual encounters such as witnessing or listening of sexual intercourse or having sexual contact with the older adult. The results of such atypical experiences depend on how children perceive them and when the experience comes to their attention, on the reaction of adults. Seeing parental coitus is harmless if children interpret it as playful but harmful wrestling if they see it as hostile, assaulting behaviour, or it may be a hideous trauma that leaves psychic scars for a lifetime. Many atypical changes take place during the formative years by interaction. A child may associate clothing with gender and sex, in particular underclothing, stockings, and shoes, and thus lay the foundation for later fetishism or transvestism.
