Service Learning as A Learning Methodology
Service-learning is an education and learning methodology that incorporates significant network administration with instruction and reflection to enhance learning, teach civic responsibility, and reinforce networks. Volunteerism means helping someone with something without getting paid for it. Community Service means work that is done by you or a group of people to benefit others. The three terms are unique in their own ways. Service-learning is giving someone awareness and teaching them about something. Volunteerism is helping someone without getting paid. Community Service is helping the community and making the future brighter. All three are very similar to each other. They benefit the community and increase awareness of issues in our society. To make the community better, think about other people around you. Some people do not have everything you do, but they are very thankful to God for what they do have, the other hand people who have everything who has everything do not often share with others and only think about themselves.
The Houston Food Bank’s mission is to help people in need by feeding them. The task I was given was in the warehouse making boxes for the seniors. My responsivities: were to open the pasta boxes and hand them to a team member, help them put two boxes of pasta in each box, and recycle the empty boxes. We made sure that we included two juice bottles, two boxes of Bran Flakes, two cartons of one percent low-fat milk, one bag of dried beans, two fruit cans, two cans of sliced potatoes, two cans of tuna, and four cans of vegetables. The last step was to put the USDA paper on top of the food and close the box, making sure the box weighed 30 pounds.
Teamwork means work done by a lot of people, with each team member doing their assigned part to finish the project. Communication means exchanging information or expressing our feelings or ideas about something to the people we know or to our team members. Networking means exchanging information within the group and make professional and social contact. At the Houston Food Bank, I was involved in each of them. I helped put the pasta, tuna, and milk in the boxes, so we could finish the project. One of our team members, Ashely, was telling us that If you are a student, you will a discount on Amazon Prime and can receive a six-month trial, including free-two-day shipping. For student membership, the price is $7.00 per month or $59 per year.
This project opened my eyes, and I am very ashamed I never knew about Houston Food Bank before. If I had known about it, I would have helped my community. Now, since I know about it, I will donate and help on the first Saturday of each month. If you help the people who are in need, GOD will reward you by giving you something that you only dream about but could not afford to have. I really enjoyed this project and learned new information. I had no idea how people work in the warehouse until I visit Houston Food Bank for my project. I am planning to attend other food drives that we have in Houston, and I am planning to host one by myself in the future. I am very thankful to GOD for giving me this opportunity to see how to help people around the World and how to kill hunger. I am also very thankful that I got to meet a lot of new people that go to the same University as I put I never until this project and I made new friends during this project.
