Personal Essay on What Makes Me Unique
My name is Hoi Ying Candice Chan. I'm a typical 18-year-old girl that recently graduated from high school and wanting to pursue my dream job at the university. Each one of us is born unique in the same way and I believe I also have my own uniqueness. ‘Dedicated, assertive, and enthusiastic’ would be three words that I would use to describe myself. I’m a sociable person that likes to communicate with people to get to know new interesting individuals.
Even though I was born in Hong Kong but I lived in Thailand for more than a decade. Friends that I have made in both countries are actually very different in many perspectives. However, I have made many friends and was also able to go along very well with all of my friends. Friends in both countries say I’m an adventurous and interesting girl with a good sense of humor. I feel extremely comfortable when I meet new people who are happy to meet me. I also believe that friendship is one of the most important values in human life. Peers can exchange new ideas, find many interesting things about each other and experience new things together. I sincerely appreciate friendship and people who surround me.
Furthermore, I also consider myself an athletic person, since I was young I always loved to play sports this includes swimming, tennis, basketball, chair-ball, etc. I was also once in Bangkok Patana School TigerSharks swimming team. Besides that in the recent school sports day, I was untrusted with the task of heading the sports section in our house team. I was responsible for coordinating with everyone involved in the sports section, from the teacher to each sports team leader and also in taking care of the welfare of the athletes. From this, it has given me the ability to work well under pressure, since everything during the days was chaotic and you had to work against time. I was also the team captain for both swimming and basketball for 2 years. In addition, one of the activities in my life that changed myself most is when I got a scholarship to join an exchange student program at Wisconsin, USA.
I have learned so many things when I was there seeing the difference in culture and ways of living. It enabled me to be more mature, improved my self-esteem, and was also a good chance for me to be ready to embrace differences and diversity in people. Finally, I’ll maintain my uniqueness and listen to the counsel of my own heart and mind for every decision that I take in my life. My mind is my best guide and it has always helped me achieving happiness and success in my life. That perhaps make me different from many other people.
