New England and the Southern Colony's Society
New England and the Southern colony's social factors like politics, economics, and religion deviate from each other. These factors had benefits and limitations in society. For instance, the political factors of the New England society helped them form a common control considering that the Southern colony's landowners possessed the authority.
Southern's were mostly Anglicans which means that they are the members of the Church of England. Moreover, the Anglican church wasn't as harsh as the Congregationalists, which involved denominations but still had to support the Church. Considering that the New England colony's religious factors were extremely severe and served as a model to society. The Puritans created the Congregationalist Church, which is state-sponsored in the sense that a person should pay a levy no matter which religion he/she signifies. But soon the Congregationalist Church was diminishing its influence because of Half-Way Covenant and the Salem Witch Trials.
Economically the Southern Colonies were cultivating tobacco and rice, which were enormous cash crops. The agriculture required a lot of Indentured servants who were in contracts usually 4 to 7 years and once servants completed their work they were granted land. But Nathaniel Bacon started a revolution called Bacon's Rebellion and urged southerners to use slaves rather than indentured servants. The Southern was profiting to use slaves for plantation since they don't require land and this caused Chattel slavery. Although the South is suited for farming the north was more reliable at fishing and rum production, these products provoked them to trade worldwide and also began shipbuilding because they were praised for their timber, and soon were grappling tight to England. Considering the excellent harbor trade ports like Philadelphia and Newyork, merchant trading was inevitable. New England also did farming to sustain but regularly imported food due to poor soil.
The southern colonies resembled essentially England's government, usually, huge landowners controlled legislature, which was not democratic, and had to go through small wars with Indians for land. New England colony's government was quite severe and theocratic, unlike the South the New England was very democratic. Everybody desired relief from religious oppression in England, these people were mostly puritans. The puritans had many disagreements within Massachusetts Bay Colony inducing the establishment of Rhode Island by Roger Williams, Connecticut by Thomas Hooker and New Hampshire by Jhon Wentworth. Voting was quite strange compared to now, back then a man had to be a member of the Congregationalist Church to vote but after the events like Halfway Covenant and Salem Witch Trials, the voting rights developed. Factors like politics, economics, and religion form a society but these factors vary for New England and Southern colonies and developed a truly distinctive society. These factors are very different compared to today's lifestyle and extremely diversified comparing themselves.
