My Enthusiasm For The Study Of Crime
People’s behavior is fascinating. Why do some conform to societies rules and others break them? Over recent years, crime has escalated and mounded to modern society with the rise in cyber-crime and terrorism. With crime being more chaotic, we need to understand why people commit crime in order to prevent it. Illustrations of this are the increase in knife crime in London and the mass shootings in America, which has sparked debates on whether guns should be made illegal.
The subjects I am studying at A-Level have increased my interest in further study. By studying Law, I have learnt how the law and the UK’s justice system functions effectively. Studying ‘Crime and Deviance’ as part of my Sociology A-Level has allowed me to understand why many commit crime and ideas of how to prevent crime. In addition, History has given me a perspective on how rules in society have changed and helped me improve my analytical skills. Within school life, I tried to be as involved as I possibly could. In year 10 and 11, I was a school prefect whereby I helped at school events, such as open evening. This has enabled me to gain more leadership skills and has improved my ability to problem solve. Moreover, by being a one-to-one mentor, it has increased my confidence to speak to people I don’t necessarily know about challenging topics.
Outside of school, I have completed Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award and I am currently working towards my Silver Award. From this, I have gained teamwork and communication skills which transferred to my volunteering at Old Chelmsfordian’s Tennis Club, where I know work as an assistant coach. Through this experience, it has given me a passion to continue to work with a variety of different people with varying backgrounds and given me more ammunition to possibly work in the police force. I have also gained this interest through other experiences. For example, I have close family and friends who work or have worked in the police. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to visit Alcatraz, which has given me more of an insight into how criminals were punished in the past. Reading books and watching television programs has also increased my enthusiasm for the study of crime. Examples of this include ‘A stranger Beside Me’ by Ann Rule, which gave me more knowledge on one of the most famous serial killers, and ‘The Force: Essex’ has shown me how the police system works in my home county.
In my spare time, I attend horse riding and tennis lessons once a week. I also enjoy enjoys socializing with friends and watching friends. I am a reliable and hardworking student and attending university will give me further knowledge on the study of crime, which will aid me in a possible career in the police force.
