The main reason that I chose this topic is because everyone here has come into contact with a child with language, speech or overall communication skills difficulties. So it is very vital for us to understand the difficulties that these kids pass through so that we could be able to help them out of this problem. This is so because we are now the adults that these young ones are looking for help. Hence, it is very vital if we understood these difficulties so that we shall be able to help these children. Through this, I was sure that we shall understand how the language and speech difficulties can really impact on the young one’s overall development. Through this we shall be able to identify the extent of the problem and administer the best possible solutions.

Also, one day we were all kids. We have seen many kids grow and hence through this we know the many requirements of a child in learning and the acquisition of communication skills. So I decided to choose this topic to boost our knowledge on caring for these kids and also to be responsible adults. This is a topic that people think that they know everything that should be done but I had to dig out to come up with facts about it so as to substantiate what others knew.

For instance, on how language, speech and communication will impact on the overall development of the child, one could point out the social, personal and emotional development. This looks at how a child will develop self-esteem and confidence and also at how children make decisions and choices. It is really important to learn the ways in which these communication problems could be modified because a kid with a communication and language difficulty may find it very difficult to express their preference and needs, and this makes it very difficult to make their own choices and decisions.

So the development of acceptable communication skills is very reliant on the help from the adults like most of my audience. Children may refrain from engaging or entering social institutions where they have difficulties in interacting and participating to the fullest this can adversely affect their social and emotional difficulties. So it is very vital that I could address this issue.

There are many factors that can cause difficulties in language and speech in children, these include:

Developmental difficulties- this will affect the kids with Autistic Spectrum because they will find it very difficult to understand verbal or non-verbal skills.

Childhood illness- a child with chronic ear infection can have a lot of difficulties in language and speech development. If this infection persists, there will be fluids in the ear and this will impact on the child’s hearing. This affects how a child will process the language and hence result in delayed language and speech skills acquisition.

  • Guided Activity-Every time you talk with a child with this difficulty, always use a simple language or phrases.

  • Use of visual aids-this could be a very successful strategy for training children with communication difficulties. In every day’s communication, hand actions and gestures could support a conversation and also engage a child. Visual aids could be used to help children in understanding the day to day routine and making decisions.

  • Lack of simulation-kids learns through watching others. They copy language by observing the behavior and actions of the others around them. If the kids do not receive adequate simulation, they will end up having difficulties in communication skills. The literacy runs an initiative that is titled, “talk to your baby” so as to support early language simulation. They state that, “lack of early language stimulation can lead to language delay, and sometimes literacy and learning difficulties that then extend well beyond early literacy development and can be extremely costly or difficult to remedy.”

To conclude, I would say it would be important for us to adapt the communication methods for the kids that are well suited for them to develop their good language, speech and the overall communication skills.

Language, speech and communication skills are very vital for promoting other areas of learning. A child with communication difficulties, their overall development will be affected. The impacts of a child's language and communication difficulties vary depending on the individual needs of the child along with the severity of these difficulties. The following areas could be adversely affected.

Effects of speech and language difficulties in children

  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Play- play is vital for children’s development, structuring their confidence as they learn to think about problems, to explore and also to relate to others. When a child gets older, they start using languages to relate to others in the games. The other children start incorporating rules to the games. For a child to play the game he/she must follow the rules, but if they had difficulties in communication, they will obviously be left out and hence this would lead to low self-esteem and loss of confidence. This will also affect the child’s Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

  • Literacy- difficulty in understanding and processing language can lead to delays in acquisition of phonic and reading skills.

    Birth difficulties- Dysarthria is a condition that affects the muscles that are used for speech and hence leading to language and speech difficulties. This is mostly caused by changes to the brain during pregnancy and also at birth.

    Speech, communication and language development are always at the heart of each and every child’s learning as well as the link to other areas of the child’s development. Without these skills in speech, language and communication, a child will not reach their full potential. According to a report by the Charity ICAN, one out of ten children, about three children in every classroom have difficulties in communication that may require help from a specialist (http://www.ican.org.uk). With this number of children with communication difficulties, it is very vital to have practitioners who are more knowledgeable to support these kids in speech, language and communication skills.

Before kids learn to say a word or a sentence, they explore their voices through producing different sounds and noises. So, with a prolonged use of bottles and dummies will make the children adapt the sounds of these bottles and they will hence be using their voices less often. The teat from the dummy or bottle can also disrupt the tongue and lips movement at the front of the mouth and this leads to a distorted speech.

Praise the children’s efforts- praising a child on what they have done well will raise the child’s self-esteem and confidence, hence boosting their participation.

Friendships- a child with difficulties in communication will find it very difficult in mingling with the others and hence their friendship with other children will be much compromised and this will lead to losing a lot from the others.

It is very evident that there is an increasing number of children who are entering the education environment with language and speech problems. This speech will highlight some of the main causes of language and speech difficulties along with the effects this can have on the other areas of the child’s development. It will also highlight the major measures to be taken to effectively boost the children’s communication skills.

The children may need help if they have learning difficulties, they will be able to have someone to keep close eye on them and to make sure that they are progressing, for the adults they will need help in controlling their drinking problem if they have one and to understand the damages that have happened. Any person will be able to receive counselling if they believe they cannot get over it and will need to open up about how they feel, also having a friendly face who had not bullied the person could help to open up and talk about what had happened.

Parents are the people who will be able to influence the child to change the way they were and to not be who they are or how they are turning into. This is when they will need to have someone to be there for them so they are able to open up about how they feel and to let all their aggression out. There can be talking therapies which will help change a person’s thinking and acting towards smoking and change it positively to help them cut smoking and eventually quit.

Describe physical, intellectual, emotional and social development for each of the life stages of an individual

For social, they are not very confident and people will need to get them to interact with other people and get them into social groups. The physical side effect is the child will have low birth weight, their body features will not be fully developed which will mean they will have a small head, a flat face with a snub nose, they will also have a thinner top lip, they will also have widely spaced eyes. They may develop general or specific learning difficulties.

For intellectuals, the child may develop a few learning difficulties which will include poor memory, they also have difficulty to understand concepts such as the time and counting money. They also have bad language. For emotional, the child will have a lot of behavioral problems and for this they become hyperactive, they don’t have the ability to concentrate, they have a lot of anxiety and are very stubborn. For social, they have a lot of socialization problems which causes difficulty to build and maintain friendships.

The physical side effect is they will have a reduced performance at all the physical training they will do. They have a higher risk of heart attacks/ strokes and will have a higher heart resting rate than non-smokers. It may also affect the financial strain which will cause more worry on a person especially if they have low income. For intellectuals, smoking will lead a person to not concentrate for long; it may also lead for the person to be affected mentally.

For emotional, smoking will relieve the stress that they will be building up. For society, it can be a social activity in which people will be able to interact with one another when they are outside smoking, sometimes depending on the people, it may cause negativity in relationships.

Can the factor be identified before the birth of a baby? Antenatal screening can be given at 13 weeks to determine the likelihood of the baby developing or developing the condition. When the women go for her monthly check-ups, they can notice the child’s development growth and they will know when the baby is born whether they have been drinking throughout the process of the pregnancy. This factor cannot be identified before the birth because it is the society and the environment around them that will cause this. This factor cannot be identified because it’s the environment and the friendships that the person will develop when they are in education. They cannot be identified because they are either brought up with a family smoking which will make them more likely to smoke or they want to smoke because other people are smoking.

    Depending on how the group has been, if the group had a negative effect then that person may be rude, mean and harsh to other people just like they have grown up doing within their group. But if there was a positive effect then the person will stay the kind, innocent person they were which will give them more of a social life. Smoking may cause long term effects especially if they are addicted to it, some people along the way may develop cancer which is caused by the smoking which will lose their independents, depending on the condition it may lead to them not being able to live on their own. Care needs to be fulfilled by individual needs. Both children and adults both need regular check-ups to see how they are getting on and to monitor their health. They may develop some certain health problems and with the check-up doctors will be able to do something about it.

There may be the physical signs, for example bruising around the neck or arms, also scratches and scars. For intellectuals, this can affect the way they are towards education. If they are being bullied during school, they will not want to attend school so they can get away from the bullies, this will then affect their future. For emotional, it is an emotional distress, which will cause a lot of physical and emotional pain to them. For society, this will affect how they will interact with other people; due to them being bullied they may find it hard to trust other people and to also want to become friends in case they are bullied again. This will affect how they develop in the future because they may start to isolate themselves from people if they believe they are not strong enough to stand up for themselves.

They may have a weight problem which will cause them to put on weight and will affect how they do activities if they start to get overweight and be limited in what they do.

For intellectuals, the child may develop a lot of mental health issues while they grow older, many of them face having anxiety, repetitive and obsessive compulsive behaviours. For emotional, they may develop behaviours that could affect their emotions, they may start to get frustrated at the fact they are delayed with their communication.

  • The physical side may have positive and negative sides to peer groups, if you’re in a group and everyone in the group is skinny, it may lead to that person losing weight in a way they should which would affect the body functioning. For intellectuals, the groups may tend to be distracted with work which will allow them to fall behind on their work and affect their future. For other groups, it may be different and they may all work together to help each other with work and to achieve what they came to education for. For emotional, the groups may lead to becoming violent towards other people which will bring out aggression in them, they may also have a friendly group which won’t do any harm to people. For social, being in groups will give them the opportunity to develop their social skills, which includes leadership, teamwork or sharing.

How many factors influence the life of an individual? All people with Down syndrome, depending on the condition, may be able to live separate from their parents. They may find it difficult to cope but they could get a little bit of work to help them be like other people and not be different. Sometimes they get married and will live their lives. Most adults who have a drinking problem will need help to get them back on track and to be able to look after their child without them resorting back to alcohol. They can get lots of supervision help which will allow them to make day to day decisions with them. For some people, if they were bullied at a young age, it may affect the way they will interact with other people and will tend to isolate themselves, they are at a higher risk of having anxiety or depression. But if the bullying for them was a short term memory, they will forget about what has happened and will carry on with their lives.
