The most basic fact about films is that they are created and written basing on some studies of facts that exist in life. A movie like the sleep dealer can be explained by the use of psychology. Some of the approaches that have been adopted by the psychotherapist worldwide include the Jungian and the psychoanalysis. The two schemes were developed in the early years of the 20th century and have been widely used. Although the two approaches have varied ideologists, their basic composition and execution relies on the openness of the client to freely express their unconscious experience.

The two scholars agree that without scientific approach, the human conscious traits can still be determined from what the person can remember and see when unconscious. In this document, the author seeks to provides a clear comparison of the two approaches. To achieve it, the paper will address the features, application process and merits and critics that the two methods while finding the connection they have to the film Sleep Dealer. I aim at understanding the application of the theme of the Jungian and dream analysis in the play.

Jung and Freud developed the Jungian psychology and dream analysis in the early 20th century. After going on separate ways, the research they were working on about the unconscious therapy was driven on independently. Jung then called his theory developed the analytical psychology while Freud referred to his research as the dream analysis or psychoanalysis. Dream analysis is a therapeutic approach adopted by therapists to convert the unconscious information into substantial material information that can be useful. Majorly, this is driven from the dreams of the patient. Jungian psychology, on the other hand, stresses on personal spirit and the struggle for one to find self-understanding. Through the understanding of the same idea, it be can be seen clearly that the film sleep dealer makes use of Jungian psychology where the minds of the deals have are utilized to provide a purpose in through virtual working (Rivera).

The dream analysis is straightforward and generally simple. The main aspects that have to form part of the analysis include the patient that is willing to open up and the therapists sit and talk. After the expression of the dream, the analytical part is not entirely left to the therapist by they work hand in hand to find the solution has sense in the life of the patient. According to Freud, if the dream fails to make sense in the patient’s life then it cannot be declared to have been of any importance. As stated by Pick (2015) in his book, Psychoanalysis: A Very Short Introduction, it is clear that approach is inclusive of children. Furthermore, the need to create a conducive environment so that the patient becomes open to freely express his/her dream is a basic ingredient in the success of the therapy. He states;

“No technical equipment is needed for this procedure and no medication prescribed; the only essential furniture is chairs and a couch, although for children a few basic toys that can be put to multiple uses are also provided, along with paper, pencils, paint, etc.” (Daniel)

This could be achieved by the players of the movie where Luz offers her memories to whoever she pleases expecting payment at the end of the event. She does the same at the time she meets with Memo and then develops a connection to him.

One of the most important level of the utilization of the theories are proper approach in their application. The working environment and the bonding of the client and the therapist is so vital. Client has to be convinced that he/she can trust the psychologist. Patient starts off by narrating the dream giving all the details that he/she can recall. At this point, the therapist listens carefully noting the most symbolic items mention in the dream. In addition to listening, he/she acts as a lubricant making the patient talk and remember other events in the dream. After the dream has ended, using the symbols obtained to defined it and attached it to the life of the patient. Up to the point that the meaning of the dream is achieved, the process of application remains the same.

However, for the dream analysis provided the meaning of the dream has been found and the interpretation has been tied to their life, the client should be ready to leave at the therapy usually ends at this point. On the other hand, after determining the meaning of the evens of the unconscious self, it has also to be tied to the events of the conscious of the patient. The things that the client has control over have also to be manifested. This means that the patients will be respired to be open also and narrate the issues that he/she undergoes. At the end of it all, the meaning of the events happening in their life in relation to the dreams explained and used to bring the humanity to the person. The most important consideration that the directors of the play realized an utilized was the development of the bond of the two people before accessing the unconscious part of the human being.

From its application the psychoanalysis approach has proven helpful about 70% of the patients that have been exposed to it. Additionally, the many have appreciated the help that the therapy has given in solving their life issues. Essentially, the sleep dealer portrays another element that provides supportive evidence that access to a person’s soul can be achieved under the right circumstances. Other people can access Luz memories with easy by following the right procedures. Freud theory formed the most basic idealization of the study of the dreams in finding sense and defining the complexity of the unconscious being in a person. With this basis, Jungian theory continued his idea on the same line after attaining much guidance and friendship with the founding scholar.

Basically, Jung, having worked with a fellow scholar that had materialized his idea, it was easy for him to build upwards. However, after the beginning of implementation of the theory, several other theories have been developed with the backbone idea being supported by the two scholars. Individuals like Fordham (1978), affirms that his work was majorly based on the work that he was taught and read under the guidance of Jung.

Other theories such as gestalt therapy and existential art therapy also are based solemnly on the two theories; the former developing the use of dream in solving problem and the later working to develop the journey to help people rediscover their true self. Furthermore, other individuals that have made use of the Jung’s development include Wolff Toni, Jacobi Jolande and Stevens Anthony. The later scholars have developed other theories such as classical which still hold the main ideas that were first put in place by Jung. Furthermore, developmental and archetypal approaches have their basis in the Jung’s work. And of all these theories, the film brings them out in a more elaborate manner. Being given the future setup, the movie combines the early studies to represent their workability.

The approaches have proved their beneficial perspective with no doubt. As stated earlier, the approaches have been adopted globally, due to their efficiency. When an individual is undertaken through the process, he/she gets to release her fears and worries and is forms the first section of their healing. The fact that the therapist is willing to listen to the client without judging them gives that patient of getting hope. From the conversation of the two in the quest to find the real meaning of the dream works to better the state of the client towards his own state. Finally, forming part of the solution is of great importance to the patient. It makes his/her feel the sense dignity and being valued.

As such, the approaches were adopted make use of the knowledge researched by the two scholars. From the assessment of one’s life and dreams, it can be used to determine the instability that have been caused by the other life factors. Finally, the person gets new purpose in life and hence tends to develop renewed attitude towards events and issues in their life. As one views the play, at the end it becomes clear that the youths that had been earlier on tied to being sleep dealers turns out to find new purpose in life. Generally, the movie is a true representation of the theories.

However, not everyone thinks that the aspects raised in the two scholars are viable. Their first critic comes from the individuals that do not believe in in dreams as spiritual communication. These scholars claim that dreams come about as a result of biological processes and thus it cannot bear any meaning. According to their argument, Hobson and McCarley, claim that dreams are initiated through brain process meaning that the commands that the brain gives are not carried out but remain within the imagination of the patient. For this contradicting point affects both the theories as they are both based on dreams.

The second critic directed towards the Freudian theory, the basis of the two approaches, is that its development was mainly based on case studies and hence cannot be assumed to be right. The theory overgeneralizes a larger population. As aspect that may not be entirely true or appropriate. Also, looking at this critic, although it is aimed at the Freudian theory, it can also be true to Jungian theory. The view of Jung was to have the ability to study and solve human’s problems without carrying out experiments. As such, the theory is also based on case studies and therefore applies the generalization of his former partner.

However, the film is not limited to this critic. For the movie it incorporates the idea of science. This is portrayed at the point where it is seen that one can tap the memories of Luz through electronic connection (Rivera).

In conclusion, the paper aimed at finding the that exist between Jungian psychology and dream analysis and compared to the elements of the movie sleep dealer. After assessing the features of the two theories, it came clear that the components are widely shared and clearly portrayed in the movie.

Also, the administration of the therapies has similar approach which is achieved though connection of the therapist and the patient. This aspect also is utilized in the film. Jungian and dream analyses are from the same idea. However, the critics that are science oriented can be used to achieve better results as it can be viewed in the play where science has been given consideration.
