This nursing home has 42 residents ranging from 64 to 98 years old. Due to the different needs, communicating with each resident has to be person centred to their requirements. “!There are different forms of communication which are classed as Verbal or Non-verbal. “Verbal communication means being able to use a different variety of spoken words, whether that is in English or different languages.

There are 4 different types of Verbal communication which are, spoken, formal, informal and professional. Verbal-Communication is important to everyone especially people who are blind but can hear. you will have to make sure that you are focusing on the person using just enough eye contact and using a variety of different tones to make sure they understand the information you are telling them. Clear speech is very important, this is to make sure that the patient you are speaking to can understand you. If they don’t understand you make sure you speak to them using words that they will know, this can also be like when you are talking to a little child you have to make sure they understand things you are saying by not using difficult words that they don’t understand. In our care home we provide everything that is needed by using person centred to make sure all needs are met. “The different types of Verbal communication range from:

  • Age appropriate language
  • Non-Discriminatory language

Tone is used in many ways when speaking to someone, it is used a lot when speaking to a group of people or just one to one. It is better to say the same words in a different tone with a slight positivity on some words more than others, and yet disclose a different meaning. Also don’t rush, as information can be forgotten if you speak too quickly, especially if the person has loss of hearing, speaks a different first language other than english, or even if you are speaking to a child it may be hard for them to understand you if you are using a boring voice. “!!!Non-Verbal communication is also very important when speaking to any age range, whether that is babies all the way up to older people. Non-Verbal communication is not using spoken language, its all about using your hands, pictures, body language, gestures, eye-contact and also facial-expressions. This is all important and needed for people who are deaf and cant hear what you are saying.

The different types of Non-Verbal communications range from:”

  • Posture
  • Eye contact
  • Gestures
  • Facial expressions
  • Appropriate use of touch
  • Body language
  • Personal space

Posture is to do with body language and gives out an expression of whether or not the person you are with are interested, sick or cant hear you. People who are sat or slouched with their head in their hands show us that they are either upset or tired, Sometimes what we say is differ by what our body language is saying. Eye contact is good when communicating because it lets the receiver know you are listening. Lack of eye contact could mean the person you are speaking with is not hearing you, so you may need to think of some technologies to help with this. Touch or contact can make people feel calm but can also make them feel uncomfortable depending on if they have a disability, that is why you must be careful on who you touch and a certain amount of eye contact.

Braille is a form of communication used for a individual who has a sight impairment. It is an arrangement of raised dots on any form of writing, wether that is numbers, letters or writing. By using braille people who are blind are able to read and study what something says. It gives people the ability to become familiar with spelling and punctuation, this is good for them because now they have a way of reading things like on toilets they can feel which one is female and which one is male. You can also get newspaper specially made which are all in braille. This is good because they are able to read the news and whats been going on in the world because they cant see it. The bad thing about getting newspapers made in braille they might be a week late so they will not be up to date with everything. Braille symbols are little dots on anything you can read like toilet signs, medicine boxes or bottles etc.

Makaton is a form of communication used for someone who has learning r communication difficulties. Makaton is similar to sign language but isn’t quite that. To use makaton you must use signs and symbols. Makaton signs are used in combination with speech and in English grammatical word order. Makaton can be flexible depending on the persons needs which is good because anyone can use them if they need it is also good because it can be suitable for any age. Some people use makaton as their everyday language but some people just use it to help them communicate. Makaton isn’t just used for/with people with difficulties its also used in everyday life in nurseries to help young Megan Kitchen Unit 3 Health and Social carepeople learn to communicate and learn to know the differences in things.

Makaton is used to help people explain things as a group or as one to one. Sign Language is a form of communicating through hand signals, gestures and facial expressions. it is used for people who have a hearing impairment or are deaf. Sign language can be used in any language and can also be used on TV for example the news or kids programs etc. Sign Language is a complete language and in England over 70,000 people use it as there preferred language. Mothers, Fathers and Siblings also learn sign language if a relative is deaf or has a hearing impairment so it is not just people who are deaf use it. They are some of the types of communications we use in our care home to help support the elderly that have impairments, we also use things like music and books to help understand what they want to satisfy what they need but most of them can communicate by using sign language braille or hand gestures, they also use facial expressions which can really help us understand if they like something or if they don’t like something.

In health and social care you must use these in different settings with different people so make sure you are making someone person-centred to who they are and what disability they have. With some people if you are speaking to someone with Aspergers or Autism they might not want you to give them loads of eye contact or they may not want to give you the eye contact which could make you feel like they aren’t listening to you when they are they juts don’t want to look you in the eye so you have got to be patient with them but also making sure they know what you are saying.

When it comes to little babies or toddlers in a doctors or hospital and you have got to give them needles or tests, you should use a different pitch and tone when speaking to them from when you are speaking to an adult or older person. You are going to make sure you speak to them in a baby way and tell them they did a good job or how well they have done and you give them a stick or lolly, whereas an adult or older person you have to use a different tone and pitch by telling them what you are going to be doing but talk to them professionally and not telling them they did a really good job and giving them stickers.

One to One Communication

There are different types of communication when speaking on a one-to-one basis which are, informal, formal, professional and spoken. In health and social care their are different jobs for different types of communication. Care workers talk to work colleagues, to there service users, and to their families. This involves formal communication, Professional communication and informal communication, for example when they speak to a colleague who they work with it might be formal and possibly professional communication and same with their service users but when they are talking to their own families they speak informally.
