Comparing The Pros And Benefits Of Electric And Fuel Cars
Table of contents
In the 111 years that cars have been available for cheaper prices, there have been many new modern cars like the electric car that has been invented. For many years America and a few other countries have been producing fuel combustion engine cars to make them stronger, faster and more efficient. In the modern day, technology based products have taken a wide popularity all around the world. For cars, electric based engines are trying to beat out combustion engines. There are many reasons why electric cars are not better than fuel cars.
Fuel Cars Are Better Than Electric Cars
In this technological world, technology has taken a big hold on modern society around the globe. Technologies like cell phones have been one of the biggest advancements today. But they are not the only technologies out there that have impacted the world, that would be the electric car. The electric cars sounds really good on the outside, but on the inside, it may not appear as it is advertised.
Cars Help With Getting Around
Vehicles around the world have been used to get from place to place. Without cars, traveling would be very hard; but with the speed of cars, travelling has become faster than ever. This made it where walking and riding animals was not as needed. Traveling from one city to another can be done faster than ever with cars. Since the invention of the gasoline powered car, new inventions have been found to give cars a new meaning. In recent years, electric cars have been becoming more popular with battery powered technology. Which is good, but the problem with this is speed and the lasting power of the battery. Most electric cars today have a one speed engine that reach speeds just like regular cars on highways. In gas powered cars, there are 4 to 6 speed cars. Compared to gas powered cars, electric cars would have a hard time keeping up with a top speed of cars for long periods of time. “The problem with electric cars, at least compared to their gas-powered counterparts, is that they’re less likely to sustain that quickness because of the lack of a transmission to channel that power to higher notches,” (Kirby, 2019). In the case of sports cars, electric cars are not capable of staying at higher speeds for long periods of time.
Electric Cars Can Not
Electric cars along with other popular cars are becoming better at designs for the shape of cars. In a lot of cases, these kinds of cars look great, but can they beat out the classic muscle cars design. That would be hard to compete with gas powered cars. In the 1960’s and 1970’s, muscle cars were just about the heart of sports cars. Everyone wanted a car like that. Those that could afford cars like that would have them. Pontiac, Ford, Chevy, Plymouth, Dodge, etc. are some of the most famous muscle cars in America. “Muscle cars are known for being big, bulky, and with subtle curves on their exterior. This gives them a 'beefy' look, almost as if the muscle in the car will burst out of its own seams,” (Conroy, 2017). For an electric car, that would not be possible except making a completely different design for a classic car. The designs today for these cars include many different things that technology can only do. That would be things like Tesla’s side lift doors.
Fuel cars can travel farther with less stops
Electric cars in this present time have tried to compare to gas powered cars. With around 20,000 charging stations across the US, there is just simply not enough. With these kinds of cars, batteries can only hold so much charge. “Electric cars are limited by range and speed. Most of these cars have range about 50-100 miles and need to be recharged again,” (Rinkesh, 2016). With a smaller gas engine car, a full tank of gas can last to around 400 miles. That right there shows that a gas powered car can travel about 2 times farther than an electric car.
The Charging Takes too Long
That brings us to our next point of how long a battery can last in an electric car. Depending on the better kinds of electric cars, they can travel around 200 miles with full charge.
When that car needs to recharge, it takes the longest time to fully charge. Depending on the kind of charging station is around at the moment, charging can take from around 20 minutes up to over 20 hours to get a close to full charge. No one in this world has that kind of time to wait at a charging station for more than 30 minutes. That has to be one of the worst disadvantages that an electric car has. On the other hand, a gas car can pump a full tank or gas in less than 4 minutes. In that amount of time, going to the bathroom, get snacks or getting a nice hot cup of Joe is the perfect amount of time. No one wants to spend more time at a gas station or “charging station” than they have to. Electric cars are just not good at fast charging. “Let’s face it; charging an electric car can be an issue, especially if you’re in a rush. In the likely event that you need to charge your EV, you’re going to have to come to grips with the reality that you’re going to spend more time waiting for the batteries in your car to charge as opposed to filling up your car’s gas tank with fuel,” (Kirby, 2019). They are really meant for people that live in the city. It is meant to drive fewer miles around; like driving from home to work and back again everyday. “Electric cars are aimed at people who live in cities -- their short range and absence of exhaust emissions make them ideal for such folk,” (Reid, 2010). That would benefit these kinds of people, but people that live in the country would not have that kind of benefit. Besides, they would need trucks if they own ranches or farms.
Using The Features On the Electric Car Can Run Down Battery Faster
The features in cars is always much enjoyed when using the car. When using any kind of product with features, the battery always runs down. Depending on how much of the features is used, the battery level can run down faster. The same would be with the electric car. Although being able to drive around 200 miles, is great, the battery level would be affected if features like the stereo were running loudly. Not only that, but thinks like charging phones, heater, ac, and other technological stuff affects the battery. Therefore making the battery run down farther and perhaps affecting the miles that could be driven. “This is what you can expect if it is a really cold, rainy evening, and you have the heat on full blast and A/C running to clear the windows, headlights, radio, etc. Going slower means you spend more time running accessories, so there is a larger effect at slower speeds,” (America, 2019). That is considered with in city residents. These problems don’t have a big effect on gas powered cars. These kind of engines are built to recharge the battery that is used so much. There is usually no charging required other than just gas to refill the tank. In this round, the gas engine will win.
It Would Be Easier to Work On a Fuel Engine Than An Electric Car Engine
Electric Engines Are Hard to Understand
Electric engines are complicated because of a very different design from regular gas engines. Even with an electric engine being more efficient with less dangers to life, it still has a problem. That would be with heating and cooling. As many know, when using a technological device, high heat or low cold affects the battery and some functions that must work. That is how it is for electric engines. “Batteries are like humans,” says Anna Stefanopoulou, director of the University of Michigan’s Energy Institute. They prefer the same sort of temperature range that people do. Anything below 40 or above 115 degrees Fahrenheit and they’re not going to deliver
their peak performance,” (Stewart, 2019). Excessive heat or cold can mess up the battery if not in the right climate. This is not good, because many places in the world have very hot or very cold temperatures. After many years, the battery would need to be replaced. “The Tesla Model 3’s battery pack costs $190 per kWh while the Chevrolet Bolt’s battery pack is estimated to cost around $205 per kWh. Multiply that by their total output and you’re looking at costs of around $12,000 to $20,000 to replace,” (Kirby, 2019). No one would want to pay for that kind of overpriced battery.
Working on Combustion Engines
Working on engines is one of America's hobbies. There are approximately 1.5 million mechanics in the US with a job. Most of them majored in mechanics to work on cars. That would be cars that are gas powered. A very few of those mechanics are specialized in electric car maintenance. The worst thing that could happen would be if something went wrong with the electric car. Regular mechanics in the city would not be able to figure out what is wrong because of the advanced engine. Or they wouldn’t know how to fix things that might go wrong with technical stuff like the computer. Finding a mechanic that can do all that stuff would be hard and possibly far. “Most automobile mechanics are trained in working with internal combustion engines and may be surprised when they look under the hood of your car to find out that it doesn't have one. This means that (at least initially) you'll probably have to take your car to the dealership for most servicing,” (Lampton, 2011).
Conclusion
In the many years that cars have been manufactured, cars have been becoming more advanced. For many years these fuel cars have been made to be stronger, faster and more efficient. Since the last few years, technology has taken recognition around the world. In this essay, technology shows that they are not always the best. Therefore showing that fuel cars are better than electric cars. There are still many years in the future until electric cars can be a better car, but in the hearts of many Americans, combustion engine cars will always be a better car.
