Social Inequality In Modern World: Black Lives Matter

Racism was a serious problem back in 1861 when the Civil War started and one of the main reasons was slavery. That a group of persons is judged just because of their skin color they don’t have the right to freedom because they are not considered one hundred percent humans. Frederick Douglass was an American social reformer who escaped from slavery and wrote his speech, “What to the slave is the fourth of July?” Every author has a goal when it comes to writing a speech; Douglass as the author has the goal to abolish slavery. Douglass’s goal was to have equality for slaves and to make people understand that we all are humans and we have rights. Why did he have to write his speech to make a point for something very obvious? Equally important the nation in a way the nation achieves Douglass's goal, but on the other hand not at all.

Douglass argues to freed African Americans to have equality. Douglass uses rhetorical questions as an illustration of his emotions on the subject of slavery “Fellow citizens, pardon me, allow me to ask, why am I called upon to speak here today? What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence.” The deductions of why he has to do his speech to argue something that is obvious and has to end. There are jobs and positions that African Americans could have, but they were not considered a man. The use of parallelism is specific and has verbatim words “l will, in the name of humanity which is outraged, in the name of liberty which is fettered, in the name of the constitution and the Bible, which are disregarded and trampled upon, dare…” This use of parallelism is to emphasize the main points of his speech to make people ask themselves what they think of slavery. As has been noted racism today still continuous (pars.1-4).

Today racism is something that continues in some places more on those who lived white people. Elijah Anderson a black citizen who writes an informed opinion on how it feels like to be black in white spaces to be discriminated against every day. “Almost every black person in America has experienced the sting of disrespect based on being black” they have to endure all these negative comments of their skin color and discrimination. Why do their lives have to be so negative and difficult? Why do they have to endure this today? They don't discriminate against other citizens because of their skin color they work the same as white people. Racism is a serious thing that can have consequences in life. Back then slavery finished, but today black people don't have equality in all places (1).

The nation somehow achieves Douglass's goal of abolishing slavery. Giving African Americans equality in jobs. For example “Forty-two percent own their own homes, a figure that rises to 75 percent if we look just at black married couples.” This demonstrates how African Americans now can have their own homes and be married. On the other side, equality is not a hundred percent since they don't earn the same as white people. Including “Black two-parent families earn only 13 percent less than those who are white.” As a result, African Americans don't have equality at all (Thernstrom par.4).

In the final analysis, the nation in one part achieves Douglass's goal, but in the other not. His goal was to abolish slavery and have equality for African Americans. Slavery was abolished and somehow today they have equality. They can have a job, their own house, and married. To sum up they earn less than white people and they do the same job.
