Battle For The 50Th: Ammar Campa-Najjar Vs Duncan D. Hunter

The United States has two months left to do their homework. The candidates have been chosen by the Primary Election System and they are to face, this November 6th, 2018. One race has been in my mind this election is the race for the 50th district of California. I want to see how the candidates try to separate themselves, what they are saying about one another and how the media responds once all the speech has been spewed out by the candidates. In a race that, according to Jade Hindmon of KPBS says “Political scientists say even with an indictment the Republican incumbent Duncan Hunter is expected to keep his current seat in Congress during the midterm election. ” (Hindmon, Sep. 3, 2018) it is interesting to compare the adjectives First, the trip to each candidate’s official web site.

It seems that the wording on Mr. Hunter’s biography would appeal to patriotism with such phrases as “everything changed when the nation was attacked on September 11, 2001” (hunterforcongress. com) and calling himself a “fiscal conservative whose priorities include a strong national defense; enhanced border security, fiscal accountability and transparency, and protecting taxpayer interest. ” (hunterforcongress. com) The wording found in his opponent Mr. Campa-Najjar's candidacy site has a broader appeal to his constituency, with such phrases like “[t]he son of a catholic, working-class mother,” (campacampaign. com) which speaks to the religious and the working class, or his appeal to the small business owner with a phrase like “Ammar supported efforts to help small businesses secure federal contracts. ” (campacampaign. com) If a constituent goes to see these two sites for comparison, it seems that Mr. Hunter simply cannot bother to inform his constituency about who he is, outside of a member of the military. In the case of Mr. Campa-Najjar, there is more rhetoric to gravitate to, he opens up more about who he is by using descriptive language that helps him to diversify his identity.

Overall the initial way that both candidates present themselves favors Mr. Campa-Najjar simply by putting more thought to his personal descriptive words. One thing is how these candidates see themselves, but what kind of language do they use to describe their opponent? As mentioned earlier, there is an emphasis on the military constituency coming from Mr. Hunter’s campaign, which is something that his incumbent Campa-Najjar capitalizes. In an interview with Neil Cavuto of Fox News, Campa-Najjar speaks positively of Mr. Hunter’s service to the US. “And, first, I just want to say that Congressman Duncan Hunter honorably served our country abroad. He fought the battles that we wage abroad, so someone like me could have the luxury to fight the ones we have here at home.”
