Assessment Of Corporate Communication Based On Case Study

This project is a part of our internal assessment of Corporate Communication which involves taking an interview of an individual working in a well-known organization or a corporate body. The interview either be a face to face interview or it had to be conducted through electronic or digital modes. There was a list of questions which had to be made into a Questionnaire that we used while conducting the interview. The purpose of this interview was to practically understand the communication in the corporate world happening among employees working in the organization and to also understand the different concepts taught to usin class. This project talks about certain aspects of internal as well as external communication. It also involves personality analysis, how the person deals with certain issues and handles his life on a daily basis.
One of the reasons we chose Mr. Rushab J Mehta for this project was because he is a well to do consultant who works for Ernst & Young ,which is a multinational professional services firm and it is one of the largest professional services firm in the world.
Literature Review
Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is an introspective questionnaire which serves the purpose of identifying which personality type they belong to. After attempting the MBTI test, people change their notions about people because they themselves start understanding feeling and perceptions about people around. Traits such as Quiet, friendly, considerate, accurate, practical, realistic, observant, flexible, logical etc. are noticed after writing the test. Johari Window is a very simple tool for improving self-awareness and mutual understanding between variety of people who approach you in your daily life. It helps in understanding your day to day relationship with people around and yourself. This simple exercise consisting of picking up an adjective from a list and dropping it into the appropriate box. Communication Style is one of the most intriguing criteria that one notices in people. It consists of Passive Style, Aggressive Style, Passive Aggressive Style and Assertive Style. In this project, we observed Assertive Style of the interviewee. People with Assertive style are individuals who completely expresses their thoughts and opinions about different things without violating the rights of the opponent. The 2X2 map of internal self-awareness and external self-awareness helps the person understand, how well he knows himself and how well does he understand how others see him. It consists of 4 sections which are Introspectors, Aware, Seekers, Pleasers. This test helps give people various dimensions of perspective of how people view them and how they view themselves.
Transaction Analysis is a popular psychology based on the idea that one's behavior and social relationships reflect an interchange between parental (critical and nurturing), adult (rational), and childlike (intuitive and dependent) aspects of personality established early in life.
It refers to the psychoanalytic process in which the interpersonal behavior of an individual is studied. In other words, it is a social psychological model that talks about the personal growth and personal change of an individual.
The trait of an Adult is that they have the ability to think and determine actions for themselves based on received information. They are self-conscious about their actions and words. Parents are conditioned by their own parents, teachers, older people, next door neighbors, aunts and uncles, and many more. Their ingrained voice of authority, absorbed conditioning, learning and attitudes from when they were young. The parent is made up of number of hidden and overt recorded playbacks.
The internal reaction and feelings to external events form the ‘Child’. This is the seeing, hearing, feeling, and emotional body of data within each of us. When anger or despair dominate reason, the Child is in control.
Case Study
Mr. Rushab Mehta is a very confident individual and is fluent when communicating his views to others. On being asked a series of questions, he wasn’t hesitant to share any information about his life with us. He is a very polite person working with determination and dedication as a Senior Consultant at Ernst & Young LLP firm which is located in Dadar. He exemplified his personality type by giving suitable instances from his life about how he deals with people who approach him to seek new thoughts and ideas. From small children to adults, he treats everyone with the same enthusiasm. Rushab Sir looks at the smallest of the mistakes and works towards eliminating that particular mistake. Mr. Rushab sincerely balances his professional life by playing indoor as well as outdoor games. He pursues his hobby of playing Table Tennis and chess in his leisure time. He also played Cricket and was a member of a club. He even meets and talks to his spiritual group for his inner happiness. He expresses his utmost satisfaction while meeting people and listening to their discourses. He has no pressure from his family members regarding pursuing of his hobbies. Mr. Rushab prepares his ‘To Do’ list in the morning while performing his daily rituals. He prays every day in the morning and also before going to bed. He believes in introspecting upon himself daily about the drawbacks during the day and analyzing them in detail so that those mistakes aren’t repeated in the future. Working as a Senior Consultant for E&Y LLP, Mr. Rushab provides well thought-out plans to companies with appropriate and precise facts and figures. He goes to the client’s location and discusses the plan and prepares them to execute it. E&Y hires people from companies such as Infosys and instructs them to implement the necessary changes so that the company can realize the advantage of implementing the said changes. He is really satisfied with the position he holds at his company. Mr. Rushab works with a strategy driven mind and has patience while working on wide ranging projects. His purpose in life is to do whatever he does in the best way possible. He is a constant learner and delivers perspectives through his actions. Talking about the challenges he faces, he responds by stating “In the corporate world, every organization has conflicts”. The consultants have to deliver a plan taking into consideration their own competitors. Mr. Rushab’s job involves presenting his clients with a strategy to achieve the goals they set. It is the client’s decision whether they should implement the recommended changes or not. He presents facts & figures to his clients and makes them understand the pros and cons of the decision they make.
By his own admission, Mr. Rushab is most productive in the afternoon after he’s done with his meetings with clients and project managers in the office. He has discussions with the CFOs as well as the CIOs of the company along with many senior managers for his areas of improvement. In conclusion, Mr. Rushab Mehta advises the young generation to be clear with their goal, to be patient and dive deep into their own specialization.
Case Study Analysis
The subject of the case study, Mr. Rushab Mehta, is a very confident individual who gives out a very friendly vibe. He uses an informal tone in the interview. He is very comfortable in talking to people about his personal life. He gels around with others very easily. Being an ambivert, he never faces the problem of being doubtful or uncertain about the decisions he makes. He conducts multiple meetings daily and hence has mastered the skill of communicating. He balances his hectic work life and even allocates time to himself which includes playing indoor and outdoor sports. He plays indoor sports like table tennis and chess which help in improving his concentration and mental alertness. It also helps him in keeping his mind sharp. He does indulge in outdoor sports like Cricket as well, which help him in exercising physically. He does receive a lot of support from his family and friends when it comes to his balance of work life and personal and family time. He says that the balance has to be just right and if he gives too much time to one aspect of his life, the other aspect will be at a loss. After conducting the transaction analysis test, we came to a conclusion that the characteristics of an ‘Adult’ best suit him as he is a self-conscious individual and thinks before every action.
Mr. Rushab is a stern believer of god. He is a very spiritual individual who performs ‘Pooja’ daily and also prays for thirty to forty five minutes at night. He is also a part of a religious group and meets with them regularly. He says that it gives him the satisfaction and clears his mind and also helps him to be self-actualized. It brings him joy and keeps him down-to-earth. He plans his day as soon as he wakes up in the morning. He does it in such a way that there exists a perfect balance between work and personal life. He also makes a ‘To Do’ list which comprises of all the things he has to do during the day. As a senior consultant, he plans strategies for his clients. As he deals with clients and senior management on a daily basis, he has improved his communication and analytical skills. Not only does he make use of those skills in his daily routine but he also looks for ways to improve them and make them sharper. Mr. Rushab is extremely satisfied with his job as a senior consultant at Ernst & Young LLP. He likes his job and has worked hard in order to enjoy the benefits of being in the consultancy game as it is not an easy industry to be a part of. He says that his job is very demanding and he likes it like that. He enjoys every new client as it provides him with a new challenge. Most of the projects he works on are strategy driven and that’s kind of his strong suit.
By observing the way he answered each question, one could understand that he was really sharp and insightful in answering the questions being asked to him. He is very knowledgeable, well informed and provided insights on many topics.
He is an adept consultant. He has been working in his current company for 5 years and is really satisfied with his job. He has been promoted twice in 5 years which tells us that he is very hardworking and persevering towards his job. He got promoted from an associate consultant to a consultant in a year and a half (which normally takes around two years). He takes pride in being a senior consultant. He got his second promotion in close to two years (which normally takes about three years to achieve). As he works in a consulting firm, which is a part of the service industry, his primary target is the satisfaction of his clients. He tells us that he would even disagree with his seniors as he wanted his clients to be satisfied. He believes in doing any job in the best way possible. His decision making skills have to be really good as his client’s future revenue depends on it. He is the youngest Senior Consultant at his firm which shows us that he strives for success and has the drive in him to achieve whichever goal he sets for himself.
When the topic of conflicts in the workplace arose, he said that he handled it rather professionally and provided us with direct and straightforward answers. He is a strategic thinker and uses his head rather than his heart. He is diplomatic and tactful in his work. This shows us that even in a crisis situation, he would be able to come up with a plan with ease as he can strategize quickly.
By his own admission, Mr. Rushab is most productive during the late afternoon and evening when he is fully set in as his mornings are usually taken up by meetings. He keeps himself honest by admitting to his shortcomings. He does not procrastinate as most people do. When asked about what advice would he give to youngsters who aspire to get into the consultation industry, after much thought, he said that there are two things youngsters must concentrate on, one of them is being clear in what one does i.e. one must have a clear vision for the near future and plan well ahead. The second being that one must possess the quality of being patient as it is a very important factor for success. He also says that consulting will give you the holistic view i.e. seeing the bigger picture and not the specialized view i.e. everything in a detailed form. So, it is very necessary to have these skills and beliefs in order to succeed in the consulting industry. He also talks about proving yourself to your seniors or juniors or to oneself. The best way to do that is by proving yourself on bad projects and showing others that there is always a way to get things done, however difficult or impossible it may seem.
Conclusion
The experience we had of interviewing Mr. Rushab Mehta was enlightening and informative as it gave us an insight on his work life, communication with his colleagues, seniors and juniors and also how involved he is with his colleagues. Based on the purpose of this assignment, we have collected the required information and prepared the case study.
Hence, we can conclude that Mr. Rushab Mehta falls in the category of an Ambivert as he devotes time to himself for introspection while he is by himself. He also has the zeal or willingness of expressing his thoughts or even sharing information in detail. He is extremely self-aware internally as well as externally which is reflected in the 2X2 Self Awareness map. Also, after conducting the transaction analysis, we found that he has the traits of an ‘adult’.
