Analysis Of The Article “I’Ve Never Seen Anything Like Crazy Rich Asians Before”
I have read the article called “I’ve never seen anything like crazy rich Asians before” from the nz herald website. This article is based around Asian stereotypes and the ideas of where Asians sit in society, in terms of movie roles, workforces etc. They have done written about this topic by interviewing an actor named Wenlei Ma, she talks about her life as a teenager where she had many difficulties with her life and career choices only because of her race and cultural background. The main purpose of this article is show that racism and racial stereotypes still exist in this world and also that it is possible to break these stereotypes.
In this article Wenlai talk and explains her life before she was an actor and how her race and cultural background initially limited her from doing the thing she wanted to do most or what she was expected to do. Before becoming an actress she was talented in legal studies but because she was an Asian woman this made it extremely difficult for her to achieve this especially due to her living in Australia which is the populations is mostly made of white people. As evidence she said “I'd tell them I hated legal studies in high school. But what I left out of that answer is the other part, the part where my dad said to me years earlier, that it would be hard for an Asian woman in Australia to be a successful lawyer. That stuck with me.” In my opinion this shows that even though society says there is no more racism but no matter how you look at it there still racism to an extent in a way that society is still judgment through people appearance and then connecting stereotypes to their race or appearance. This relates to me as a Asian female sportswoman I have run into many issues where I have been judge by people who have come up to me and said that you must be extremely good at this sport because you’re Asian.
One of the reason could be they make this judgment because there are many successful Asian golf players in the world and stereotype me that i was one of them. From my experiences you’re you will always be judge by your appearance and especially you’re race then people will unconsciously put you into racial stereotypes.
In this article another idea is that it not at all bad thing if you go against what is expected of you or go against racial stereotypes. Constance Wu(name of the leading actor) is pursuing her new dreams of becoming an actress was also desperate to fit in and show society that Asians are capable of what other races are capable of all that need to happen is to have the opportunity to do so. She went on to say as well that she was proud that she was bad at math because it meant that she defied or went against the typical stereotype that all Asian were good at math. As evidence she quoted “I was actually proud of being bad at maths because it meant I defied a stereotype”. The meaning of this stereotype is that all Asian are expected to be good and exceptional at math.
The racial stereotype is bad and mean which shouldn’t be accepted in the nowadays society because everyone is equal. The movie tells the story of Rachel Chu, an Asian-American woman who visits Singapore with her boyfriend, who happens to come from one of the richest families on the glitzy island.
This movie after its release crazy rich Asian has had major success in term of their review scoring a 93% on rotten tomatoes and there are thousands and thousands of reviews saying how relatable it is. Even the producer’s said themselves that “it is a story that reflects your experience”. Meaning that is it is realistic to an extent, this is the reason why I think “Crazy Rich Asians” has found major success because it is a realistic movie with a wonderful story line that everyone can relate to even if they had similar experiences or not. One big reason as to why most of the people that have watched this movie found it so relatable is because in the movie when Rachel Chu meet her boyfriends mother, the mother immediately judge from her appearance and financial background say that she will never be enough for her son even though the boyfriend is truly in love with Rachel. People related to the movie by how Rachel was treated by the mother which immediate rejection due to the being judgmental and that Rachel was able to overcome this barrier.
In conclusion, I have read the article called “I’ve never seen anything like crazy rich Asians before” from the nz herald website. This is article is about the movie which is about the struggles of Rachel Chu faces when she is discriminated by her boyfriend mother due to her appearance and financial background. Also in the article itself the actor Constance Wu who plays as Rachel Wu expresses her opinions and experience about how her race and cultural background initially limited her from doing the thing she wanted to do most or what she was expected to do.
