The BreakFast club is an American teen movie, written and produced by John Hughes in 1985, who later went on to make Home Alone. The movie starts at Shermer High School, as they are reported for Saturday's detention on march 24, 1984 at 7 a.m. While they are not complete strangers because they have seen each others in the hallways, all five of them are all from different and social groups - John bender as known as ‘’The criminal’’ - Claire Standish as known as ‘’The princess’’ - Brian Johnson as known as ‘’The Brain’’ - Andy Clard as known as ‘’The Athlete and finally it is Allison Renolds as known as ‘’Basket Case’’ they have all been assigned to write an essay about why are they in the detention and who they think they are as a person.
As the films begins we see all the five students coming to the detention one by one, there is a small second where they have an interaction with their parents in the car, however, some of them actually don’t, this by it’s own can tell the viewer an immediate impression of each character. Claire's father promises her to go on a shopping spree if she completes the detention, Andy’s father was not angry at his son for bullying the other student, however he was utterly disappointed that he got caught, Brian’s mother was forcing her son to find a way to study during the detention even tho he has told her ‘’ Mum we are not supposed to study we just have to sit there and do nothing’’.
Alison’s parents drive off without saying a single word to her and finally Bender shows up to school by himself. From this single scene we can determine that Clair is a spoiled rich girl, Brian is a nerd/geek, Alison is quite possibly a weirdo/introvert, Andy is a sport guru and Bender looks like he does not care about this detention whatsoever. All these are traits on how other people view them. This movie is based on how other people view each other and how people view themselves, also depending on their social groups.
According to Herbert Spencer, he has mentioned that with harmony and peace you could solve any type of problem, with no conflict whatsoever, all you need is harmony and balance between others to solve the problem. He believes that society will ‘’correct itself’’ and then strive for symmetry. However, Karl Max believed that society ‘’does not correct itself’’ and all class conflicts will drive change in itself. His theory is that society is made out of different groups/classes this meaning it will be very usual to have class conflicts. As time goes the class will learn from the conflict and have a positive change. The most perfect example of Karl Max’s theory is The BreakFast Club. Now before I tell you where this is shown in the movie. There are in fact multiple scenes in this movie where Karl Marx’s theory is shown, however I will pick the scene that I believe where the ‘’change’’ truly happened.
The scene starts off when all 5 students go outside of the aula/studying room to the hall. They ramble about and run around stealing from lockers, when all of a sudden they heard Richard vernon come (the teacher) Everyone was running together except Bender all the way. At the end he decided to go by himself, he ended up in the gym (PE hall). Richard clocked through the window and saw him, he took Bender and placed him in an office because he was truly fed up.
Now, Bender being ‘’cool’’ himself, he decided to climb through the vents up in the ceiling and to jump down back in the study hall. Richard heard a ruckus and rushed to check. As soon as he entered Bender decided to hide under Claire's desk. Richard began to question where did this noise originate from, Brian, Clair, Alison and Andy all begin to lie to save Bender from getting caught. While Bender is quietly under the table he hits his head, Andy begins to knock on the table, Brian begins to cough alongside Claire and Alison just to get the attention away from Bender and how there is a human being hiding under a table.
This made me as a viewer really surprised because I did not see this coming. The reason I did not see this coming is because I personally never thought they would even become friends when I watched this movie. This all relates back to the theories, there was no way all of the students were going to be nice to each other instead of fighting with each other the whole time. Instead, they kept fighting and arguing which in the end made them become friends and actually worked out.
In conclusion there are many things to learn from this movie, I have made sure to relate it to my theory and explain why so. There were multiple scenes to pick from, however I chose the scene which started their true friendship.
