Abortion Should Be a Choice, Not a Crime
Abortion shouldn’t have to be a topic of controversy or debate. Everyone should be aware of how abortion can affect and benefit everyone not just women. Society should be enlightened with the importance of abortion. Due to the fact that abortion has become illegal in many countries people are leaving their homelands in order to get abortions. People are crossing state lines to have an abortion. Pills are being sold in the black market for abortion! Most abortions occur due to rape, incest, poverty and fetus having abnormalities. In some state’s women, as well as doctors go to jail and are charged with murder for having an abortion or performing an abortion. Law should not dictate what a woman can and cannot do with her body when it comes to abortion; it should be a personal choice.
Abortion is what they call the termination of a pregnancy. Abortion is a medical or surgical procedure that deliberately ends a pregnancy before an embryo or fetus is born. There is also a new method. The pill which known as the RU- 486. You have two sides of how people feel about this topic. People who support legal access to abortion typically identify as pro-choice, while those who support bans and heavy restrictions identify as pro-life.
Surgical abortion the most common abortion is performed no later than the first trimester of pregnancy. Even though it is the most painful abortion, it is less harmful. The procedure performed is suction abortion also known as the vacuum aspiration. The suction is performed removes tissue from uterus through a thin tube. Health care providers consider surgical abortions to be the safest and simplest forms of surgery. According to Planned Parenthood abortions performed during the first trimester carry significantly fewer risks to mother’s health than giving birth at the end of a typical pregnancy.
Medical abortion doesn’t require surgery. This procedure uses medication to end a pregnancy. Just like surgical abortion, medical abortion is also performed no later than the first trimester. The most common drugs that are used here in the United States are mifepristone and misoprostol taken together. Mifepristone is also known as the RU-486 or the abortion pill. The RU-486 blocks the pregnancy hormone. Two days after taking the mifepristone pill you would take the second pill, misoprostol. Misoprostol causes the uterus to expel the embryo. Medical are usually less effective than surgical abortions but carry less risk infections.
Unlike surgical abortion using the RU-486 has a process. The drug may only be prescribed during the first seven weeks of pregnancy. During this abortion process women must visit their doctor three times over a period of two weeks. The first visit is to determine how long she has been pregnant. The second visit she receives the pill (RU-486). The third visit is to determine if the abortion was successful.
Even though the Food and Drug Administration has approved the abortion pill there is still many questions on whether it will be legal in all states. After the FDA approving the abortion pill also known as the RU-486 pill, there has been a few restrictions set for doctors who want to prescribe it and women who want to use it. RU-486 has been a controversial drug that was approved after 12 years of research. On the hand France has made the abortion pill available for decades. Doctors must be able to determine the length of time a woman has been pregnant. Women must receive written instructions on the drug use and side effects. Before receiving the drug there must be a signed statement that states instructions have been read and will have a surgical abortion if the drug does not work.
RU-486 is to be marketed under the name Mifeprex. Although states have a patchwork of laws regulating surgical abortions, none of these addresses drug-induced, or medical abortions. Thirty-one states have laws requiring that a parent or guardian be notified or consent-before a minor can have an abortion. Laws in forty-three states that prohibit non physicians such as nurse practitioners from performing surgical abortions and laws in fourteen states that specify how doctors who perform surgical abortions must lay out and staff their offices.
Currently 86% of US countries have no abortion provider at all. There are 8 states that have only one abortion clinic. Making hard to have access to an abortion. Not only is there very few abortion clinics. Many insurances don’t cover the cost for a medical or surgical abortion. with that being said some women have to pay between $300 to $1,100 depending on the procedure they might want. According to David J. Garrow a professor at Emory University one in four women travels more than 50 miles to get a surgical abortion.
Alabama is a state that has a bill that makes abortion illegal. According to Alabama’s “heartbeat” bill it is a felony for a doctor to perform or attempt an abortion, and anyone that violates the law faces up to 99 years in Alabama’s prison. Abortion is illegal with the exception of the mothers life being in threat. Other than that there is no other exception for this procedure. Unlike other states in Alabama does not permit the procedure in cases of rape or incest. According to Pro-life activist abortion is condone in case of rape or incest. Some believe that all abortions are murder. Pro-choice on the other side contend that no restrictions should be placed on abortions. Some support laws that require a waiting period before the procedure can be performed. Pro-choice also support laws requiring permission from their parents. Women shouldn’t be prohibited from having an abortion. There shouldn’t be such thing as it being illegal because its considered murder. There are plenty different reasons .
