Tom’s is a 20th century clothing manufacturer, who have been able to significantly distinguish their product from any other clothing manufacturer’s on the basis of its footprint all over the world. First starting as a social media experiment, Tom’s flourished to being one of the most diverse yet profitable clothing companies on the market. In just over ten years of existence the companies estimated value is just over 400 million dollars, all while keeping the “one for one” model still alive. This model is the backbone of the company, it stands for every product that Tom’s sells another is given to a child in need. Tom’s has been able to leave this outstanding footprint on over 70 countries all over the world and have given over 60 million pairs of shoes to those in need. Founded in 2006, by Blake Mycoskie on a vacation in Argentina where he noticed the hardships children faced in rural countries by not having a pair of shoes on their feet. Tom’s headquarters is located in Los Angeles, California and their companies internet address is toms.com. The reason behind I chose Tom’s to conduct my web-based research paper on, is due to the fact that I believe Tom’s has a unique ambition very different to that of companies who sell similar merchandise. Tom’s has been able to generate revenue, keep the consumer’s satisfied, and have a positive impact on society. These three components of a company in my opinion are very rare to have in this day and age.

Due to Tom’s company’s standard of helping those in need, sustainability can easily be seen as one of their most passionate objectives. Tom’s fight for labor protection policies and healthy working conditions, is just the start of how their product keeps a healthy impact on both society and the environment. Tom’s has released product information on the materials used in their most vital product which is their shoes. Which are made with recycled materials such as polyester and organic cotton. They have formulated their company’s mode on doing everything possible to have a positive impact on the environment. Not only are the materials used sustainable but they have also put most effort on watching their direct factory suppliers. They believe this is where over 70% of inhuman and non-environmental practices take place. By keeping a close eye on this part of their company it enables Tom’s to stay as sustainable as possible.

Tom’s puts in place various competitive strategies to set their company apart from all the clothing industries top competitors. These strategies have enabled Tom’s to flourish in both the revenue aspect of the company and the overall customer satisfaction of the product. Tom’s “one for one” model, has allowed their customer network to not only be for an individual who needs a pair of shoes but also for someone who just wants to do a good deed for another. Tom’s has also generated volunteer operations all over the world with revenue generated from their product. Such as in countries with limited access to water “TOMS Roasting CO. launched in 2014”, has allowed for in 6 countries over 140L of safe drinking water to any individual in need. Tom’s ability to adapt to societies constant form of the “norm”, have enabled their competitive dimensions to be far more advanced than any of their competitors.

If I had the chance of meeting the CEO of Tom’s Blake Mycoskie, I would ask three questions about his company. The first of which, “With more companies continually offering similar expenditures that you have in place in rural countries around the world what will be your next big impact on these countries to set you apart once again?”. Secondly I would ask, “Do you believe that your one for one model is in the long term hurting your sales goals or if wasn’t in place would dramatically injure your companies sales revenue?”. Lastly I would ask Mr. Mycoskie, “Since your company model is on the basis of helping out others, when other companies adopted similar standards of helping others. Did this change your long term goal of the footprint you wanted Tom’s to leave or inspire you to continue to search for new improvements for Tom’s?”.
