Abuse Of Power In The Way Up To Heaven And Clerk Wanted
Compare and contrast:«Arriving early is better than arriving late” that common saying is something we all have heard. Most people are usually nervous for not being on time and sometimes that nervousness can lead to that people around us may feel that we are a person full of stress, which can be a negative part of our life. Some people will enjoy seeing you suffer, some will try to show you that they have more power over you. We can take a closer look on “The way up to heaven” and “Clerk wanted”, In these two texts the main characters experiences bullying from the ones who enjoys seeing them suffer and misuse their position. Mrs Foster in “The way up to heaven” is a person who fears to be late and the thought of being late, would make her nervous, meanwhile her husband did not cared when she was nervous, he just wanted to see her suffer. It is written in the text that “Her husband walked down the steps of the house slowly, pausing halfway to observe the sky and to sniff the cold morning air” while she stressed to miss the plane. It is cleared the her husband who has power over his wife, enjoys seeing her suffering, otherwise he would not walk down the steps slowly and pretend like his wife is not is not in a hurry. The same thing plays a role in the other text as well. The guy who named Colshaw is on a job interview, and his manager who seems that he is a person with a power because of his position on the office, misuse the position and tends to make Colshaw uncomfortable with the questions he asks him.
For example Desmond(manager) tend to not remembering Colshaw’s name several times, so he called him for “Mr. Conshort” and “Mr. Crankshow”. The similarities in these two texts are that both Mrs. Foster and Colshaw fears to be late, and prefers to be on time. The persons who thinks that they have more power just because they are in a higher position at work or at home, disrespects the ones with a “lower” position. Mrs. Foster and Colshaw were described “nervous, polite, and patient at a point” and they both take actions. Both characters did something in the end to stop the bullying. Mrs Foster let her man die in an elevator and Colshaw shouted to the manager that it was enough of being rude to him and that he did not want the job. The differences here are that Mrs Foster was a married to man, so she had enough of being controlled for everything she wanted to do. Colshaw had enough of being asked questions about unnecessary things. In conclusion, the texts are about revenge, bullying, oppression and etc. In my opinion no matter if it is a child, teenager or an adult, people will always experience getting bullied and so on. It does not have to be obvious that someone bullies you, there is several ways to bully someone and to show them you have more power and are more worth than the others. The bully wants to wound, to have power over, to humiliate and to destroy. The bully sets the stage for the target, for the victim, for anyone who is considered “ the other”.
