The purpose of the experiment is to test the effect of alternative medical therapies on E coli Cultures. The control of the experiment will be the E. Coli culture that has no medicine applied. The dependent variable is the zone of inhibition while the independent variable is the type of medicine used. This experiment relates to the experiment because it has research that shows the Antibacterial properties and antimicrobial properties of garlic. This research paper is one of the reasons the scientist choose garlic to test against E. Coli. It also shows the scientist that garlic is testable against E. Coli because that was the bacteria being compared in the experiment. Garlic is shown to have genetic properties that slow the growth of E. Coli. Further research shows that it has been used since ancient times to fight viral and bacterial diseases by preventing the protein and DNA in targets cells not being able to synthesize. “The healing property of honey is due to the fact that it offers antibacterial activity, maintains a moist wound condition, and its high viscosity helps to provide a protective barrier to prevent infection. Its immunomodulatory property is relevant to wound repair too.

The scientist choose honey because there has been research for antibacterial properties of honey. The scientist chooses to use honey as one of his independent variables because it will allow for the E. Coli to be trapped in the high viscosity in honey and prevent further growth of a K-12 E. Coli colony. “Clearly various families of viruses, with different structures and replication schemes, and consequently bearing different potential molecular targets, are involved in respiratory symptoms, and many of them are susceptible to Echinacea extract” This extensive research on Echinacea has shown numerous antibacterial properties and lots of health properties that will benefit humans. The research done is why the scientist choose to research the effects of echinacea on E. Coli.

Studies have shown that Echinacea is an immunostimulant. This means that when echinacea is ingested into the body, it causes the rapid production of widespread antibodies used to kill bacteria. This is very useful for humans because when people are having a weak immune system response to something and need a natural, non-steroid boost. Echinacea allows for this to happen. In since Echinacea has been shown to have antibacterial properties, the scientists choose to use it in the experiment and compare it to honey, garlic, and antibiotics. The antibiotic the scientist is comparing is known as Cipro (ciprofloxacin). Cipro is a widespread use antibiotic which is prescribed when there are minor infections or an unidentifiable bacteria that isn’t cause a major problem. The reason for this is Cipro is engineered to stop the growth of bacteria to prevent spreading.

The scientists is not only using Cipro because it is used as a widespread antibiotic, but also doctors prescribe Cipro for treatment of E. Coli infections. Cirpo is the standard drug used to treat E. Coli so the scientist is going to compare Cipro to alternative medicines such as honey, garlic, and echinacea The scientist’s hypothesis is If alternative medical therapies are compared to traditional medicine (antibiotics) on E coli. cultures, then the alternative medical therapies will treat the E coli. better than traditional medicine. The scientists choose the hypothesis because as a child he was exposed to many alternative medicines to help treat disease.

The medicine worked very effectively, and the scientist believes that the medicine will kill the E. Coli better than the traditional medicine (antibiotics). K-12 E. Coli is a harmless stain of E. Coli that is normally found in our intestinal lining. It is a non-dangerous strain of the bacteria Escherichia Coli. To this day, the scientist’s parents still use alternative medicine therapy as a treatment for when the scientist got sick. The scientist’s parents have given him natural remedies such as echinacea, honey, and garlic for various purposes.

He wondered do these natural remedies work, or is it simply the placebo effect? He will compare the effectiveness of K-12 E. Coli to echinacea, garlic, and honey. I hypothesized that the alternative medicine therapies will do better in treating the E. Coli because bacteria is normally treated with antibiotics and traditional medicine. I believe that the K-12 E. Coli has yet to adapt to the alternative medicines, hence making it susceptible to the medicine.

Another benefit of using alternative medicine is there is no dosage. When taking antibiotics, if overprescribed can cause severe liver damage and other harmful effects. With alternative medicine, there is no danger in how much is ingested into our “systems.'
