Many people believe that the world would be unimaginable without using social media. Nowadays, by improving technology and the expansion of cities and societies, social media has become an integral part of people’s life which makes the communications more convenient. In retrospect, communication commenced by mailing and then by invention of cell phones it became easier and in this age by widespread use of the Internet, social media play a key role in communications even in short distances which is the readily available platform for people in order to contact each other regardless of time and location. While some think that social media ruins the basis of face-to-face communication and diminish the quality of interpersonal interactions, the fact of the matter is that it yet depends on any mature individual to decide whether to use this technology or not. In reality, social media facilitates people’s tasks in many aspects and improves businesses in general. Professionals can testify that social media keeps up with the pace of life and accelerates people’s daily routine tasks. We must only consider our personal experience with social media and ensure that we use it in a beneficial way.

The positive impacts of social media on people’s life is undeniable while today’s life is heavily tied to communications and networking. Social media is not only about talking or hearing people’s ideas but it also concerns making comments and arguing with them and socializing more in order to broaden horizons and expand knowledge. This could be evidenced by the creation of platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram people become able to express their points of view and share their ideas. It eventually improves the ability of ‘thinking out of the box’ among people and they realize how to respect each other’s opinion. Also, appropriate platforms have been made for academic society to enhance the capabilities of creativity and innovation (Osterrieder, 2013). Moreover social media empowers people to make decisions about their communications while they can choose which company or website to visit, or what individuals to follow (Dahl, 2010). Furthermore, due to the fast pace of hectic life in the technology age, people are not able to keep in regular contact with each other, and there is no sufficient time for spending in time-consuming daily tasks, thanks to social media platforms and useful applications, all these obstacles once believed to hinder daily activities are no longer considered as impediments. In addition, Social media programmes can cater opportunities for people to learn how to effectively interact in a community, manage a public social area and develop social norms and skills as a group member (‘benefits of Internet and social media’, n.d.).

The advantages of social media go beyond enhancing the quality of people’s communications and help them catch up with the pace of life. In fact, social media raises the ground for improving academic performance since it plays a supplementary role in learning techniques and is known as a follow up tool in the education system. The impact of social media on education is more positive by recognizing it as an all year round available platform and encouraging landscape for students to learn better and communicate with peers and teachers in a friendly environment which contributes to increasing productivity (Kalasi, 2014). In the same vein, based on the research conducted by Kalasi in 2014, social media by means of dynamic conversations makes a notable change in conventional relationship between students and teachers in order to have a more satisfactory learning experience. Also, a large portion of e-skills development will happen among people consequently.

Yet, there is a dark side to this picture. An opposite line of argument posits that social media has negative impacts on communication skills and decreases the quality of interpersonal communications. Some think that a face-to-face connection between people is more effective and persuasive that is undoubtedly true in some circumstances but the fact of course is that, social media to some extent enhances people’s communications and can serve as a time-saving tool for many aspects of daily routine life. As a case in point, people can be informed of their surroundings worldwide and it also helps networking which is a dramatic impact of social media to maintain connections (white, 2011). However, some argue that social media is addictive and costs too much, in fact it allows free and easy creation of content which is a cost-effective way of promoting social communications for all segments of society and it could be more effective if any individual controls the usage and prevents the negative side effect of social media (Dahl, 2010).

In conclusion, because of the breakneck speed of technology, keeping up with the pace of life and ability to coordinate with everyday life is an essential requirement for mankind today. For one, nowadays social media cater to businesses and markets with huge ground to serve the customers and compete. So it will be easier for consumers to choose wisely and receive a better customer service. Further, Being able to quickly adapt to cutting-edge technologies, services and environments is considered as a valuable talent by employers, and can facilitate both formal and casual mastering (‘benefits of Internet and social media’, n.d.). Although, social media have some backdraws like any other piece of technology but the important point is in which way people use it. We must think about how we want to improve the quality of our lives by harnessing the technology and taking advantage of social media by controlling our usage and restricting our desire to prevent any probable side effects of social media.
