Sewing As A Way To Express My Creativity
Creation twinkles with coolness, sparkling in blues and greens. Innovation sparks in metallic tones, bursting with hues of golds and silvers. Renovation is lit with swirls of a warm palette, some red, some yellow. Since I was a child, I’ve always had a deeply ingrained sense of curiosity. Everything I did, everything I found, and everything I learned had a certain enchantment, drawing me in closer. I loved to explore what I don’t know, from different types of sports, to different forms of art, and even different languages. This curiosity inside me continuously pushed to figure out what I didn’t understand, learn things I didn’t know, and cultivated my love for creating things. When I was in the third grade, I remember watching my mom sew at the dining room table. Different shapes and colors of fabric flew around, coming together to create the most wonderful dress I had ever seen.
As I watched the elegant ensemble I became engrossed in its process; my mom worker together with the machine so comfortably, so methodically, so beautifully. I started to wonder if I was capable of creating something of my own like I had just witnessed. Soon after, I was struck with the idea of creating something unique. I had always loved the stuffed animals I had that filled all of the shelfs in my room, but I wanted something more, something different, something I created. My mom took me to the fabric store and let me pick out my own sewing pattern and fabric. I raced up and down the tall, looming aisles of fabric, searching for one that really spoke to me, one that really stood out. After about my fifth run through all of the isles, I saw a glimpse of bright blue falling behind a stack of fabric on the shelf. It was perfect. The bright blue fabric felt somewhere between fluffy and fuzzy. The minute my mom and I got home, I eagerly started to work. I carefully cut out the paper pattern, pinned it in place on the fabric, and started snipping. With the hours I spent working came clouds of blue fuzz, sticking to all of my clothes and intertwining with my hair. After a few days, it was finally done. My fuzzy, bright blue elephant was complete. I was so excited, I brought it to school the next day to show all my friends and teachers.
Since then, I’ve progressed a lot further in the craft, creating and styling my own unique stuffed animals. From start to finish, I do it all. Sewing takes many years and plenty of discipline to master. It has helped me learn many things, from the creative process, to time management, and patiences. Through the years, I have learned to appreciate that sewing doesn’t give you quick satisfaction of accomplishment like many other things in my life. It truly is a very involved process that takes many year of practice to master and many days and sometimes weeks to create a piece. Most people only see someone that takes a few yards of fabric and some time later, comes out with a finished product. Many don’t see the hours upon hours of work it took to create, the thrown away ideas, the failed prototypes. Despite the hard work, sewing is an important outlet which allows me express my creativity in a fulfilling ways. From the initial idea, to designing the pattern, to the final work, I use what I have learned to create something that is new, that is unique, that is me.
