Values are treasured by a person, a group of individuals, or an organization. Each and every single person has a distinct set of values. My values are made up of my experience, surroundings, and family background. My actions in my community, my moral decisions, and my career choice reflect my values. Overall, my values guide and impact my life every day.

My commitment to helping my community reflects my values. To me, a community is made up a group of individuals living in a location and having particular characteristics in common. Although some individuals feel more comfortable surrounding themselves with people who are of the same race and ethnicity, I for one value diversity and generosity. I believe individuals differences are a valued asset. Throughout my life, my family stressed the importance of helping others. I have volunteered with many organizations and they all revolved around doing something helpful for individuals. For instance, when I volunteered at “Feed My Starving Children”, I realized that a small group of people working towards a certain goal can positively impact others lives. I value giving back my time to those in need and I enjoy helping the less fortunate.

Over the years, I have contributed and meaningfully helped my community. Moreover, like “The Moral Subjectivism Theory”, I sometimes tend to determine what is considered morally correct or incorrect with my feelings. The “Moral Subjectivism Theory” is based on the idea that individuals make decisions using by what “they just happen to think is right or wrong.” When it comes to making a decision in my community, my actions are driven by my emotions. When I help my community, I volunteer out of the goodness of my heart. I demonstrate my values by contributing to society through community service. Margaret Mead once stated: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead’s statement has been proven to be true multiple times in history. Individuals can positively affect their community by helping a certain cause. Whether it’s helping a food bank, joining organizations, or donating money a group of individuals can undoubtedly help those in need. My actions in my community reflect my value of making a difference and doing something out of goodwill.

My values demonstrate what I stand for, and they guide me when making difficult decisions. My religion plays a key role in my life. In the article “The Nature of Morality and Moral Theories”, the Divine Command Theory stood out to me. It stated: “Religion is necessary to motivate and guide people to behave in morally good way…..connection between morality and religion mean that right and wrong come from the commands of god.” Throughout my life, my religion has impacted every decision I have made. I see my faith as a guide that helps me distinguish right from wrong and it reinforces the beliefs and values I hold dear. My religion’s commandments direct me into making the correct and moral decisions and they influence my daily life positively. Similarly, my values guide my way of thinking. Almost all of the problems in the “Moral Dilemmas packet” were difficult to resolve. Each dilemma proposed two different courses of actions in every situation. In “The Runaway Trolley” dilemma, my religion guided my thinking process. In this dilemma I had to choose between pushing a stranger off the bridge and onto the tracks, causing his death, or doing nothing to stop the trolley, letting the 5 workmen die. In the end, I decided to not push the stranger off the bridge because I would be deliberately killing the person. When thinking about each choice, I incorporated the commandments of my religion. The 5th commandment “Thou shall not kill” is important to me and is part of my values. Although choosing a solution was difficult, my religion reinforces my way of thinking and it helps me resonate. I believe that all lives matter, no matter the quantity of people. Many of the choices I make are based on my values. My values govern me into making the overall best decisions.

My experiences over the years have helped me recognize and comprehend my values. My professional life will also reflect my values. Steve Jobs once stated: “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” Steve Jobs quote revolves around the idea that it’s important to follow one’s dreams. In order to find a purpose in my life, its vital that my future career embodies my core beliefs and values. As a result, I will love the job I have and I will be doing what I love every day of my life. My values are reflected in my future career and they influence every decision I make. Growing up, I always knew I wanted to help others in any way. Similar to the “Utilitarianism theory”, I want to maximize the overall wellbeing of my society. My career choice is concerned with positively impacting individuals quality of life. Currently, I am majoring in Health Science and Spanish. My dream is to become a pediatrician who is compassionate, caring, and has integrity. My values helped me determine what career choice is right for me and what I should major in. I decided to go into the medical field because I am passionate about working hard and collaborating with others. For me, it is important that my future career reflects the values I hold dear. My values guide and impact every detail in my life.

Every individual has their own set of values. I exhibit my values in my community, my moral decisions, and in my future work. My values embody what I believe in, and they give meaning to my life. My values connect different aspects of my life ranging from my beliefs, my behaviors, and my actions.
