My Theory Of The Difference Between Art & Design

What is Art?

Art can be defined as a work created from an opinion, feeling or view that the artist brings out from within themselves. It is the taste in visual interest to different fractions of people. Art is created to share one’s thoughts and expression, to allow the viewer to relate, get inspired and learn from it. The success or greatness of an art piece can be defined by how emotionally strong the bond between the artist and their audience is. The definition of art is a philosophy. It is understood in different ways by different people. It can been categorized as form, representation and expression. Representation means the imitation of something that is beautiful. Form is described by Immanuel Kant as the formal qualities of a work because the content of an artwork is not only of aesthetic interest.

Expression is the message the art wants to deliver to its audience. Different types of artArt is found in different forms around us, it is not just limited to visual impression. It can be performing arts, literature, applied arts in case of interior design, architecture etc. Art in the field of Literature can be poetry, prose, short stories, novels etc.In terms of Performing arts, it is depicted through, singing, dancing, acting, theatre, Visual arts branches out to architecture, interior design, drawing, photography, sculpting and painting. Art is limited by culture and era. The historical art gives information of their victories and also tell us stories. The modern day art tends to depict more urban and at present issues. Art now or then is driven with inspiration and a single art piece can spread different powerful messages. Art can also vary by Cultural differences. Western Style of draughtsman ship is very different from Chinese calligraphy and art of folding origami paper from Japan. Drawing - it is the visual representation or an object using sketching tools such as pen and pencils. Painting - it is using ink or paint to depict a visual scenery or an object on a solid medium. It differs from drawing because of the tools and the purpose. Paintings are more detailed and colors and strokes can mean different emotions. Sculpture- is the 3-D crafting, shaping, carving or casting using any material around us.

This painting was completed in 13 years. After a lot of speculations, it has been suggested that the lady in the painting is the wife of the Florentine merchant Francesco di Bartolomeo Giocondo and the mother of Leonardo, Caterina. Many questions remain unanswered about the smile. It has driven people maniac trying to break its characteristic enigma. The look of calm agrees with the ideal landscape which serves as the background. This further dissolves into the distance through Leonardo’s use of atmospheric view. Bust of Nefertiti, 1345 BCBuilt by the Pharoah of Ancient Egypt, Akhenaten. Since this sculpture model was unearthened in 1912 it has been a symbol of feminine beauty. It weighs 44 pounds and is carved from a single block of limestone and is completely life-sized. The concept of portraits of royal family was common in the ancient Egyptian society. Named after the queen it is the depiction of the queen, Nefertiti's bust looks very different. The face is carved with all precise and detailed feature, and the gypsum stucco is in the limestone core stucco, which was then painted with golden-brown skin. The lips are painted red. The crown and jewelry are also filled with color. The eyes of the portrait are set with crystal, and one pupil is made with black wax. The most striking aspect of this portrait is its one never finished eye.

Pollard Birches by Vincent van Gogh, 1884. This drawing is made with pencil, pen and ink and is graphite heightened with dark watercolor on a wove paper. Van Gogh loved gnarled trunks of pollard trees. Van Gogh compared a row of pollard trees to the possession of orphan men. He meant to imply that nature and its own beauty and soul. This drawing is part of a series of seven pen and ink drawings of Brabant landscapes from 1884. The style shows individuality, it has a lot of hatching and the compositions are mesmerizing. The drawings are a crucial point of Van Gogh's work in the Netherlands.

Modern PAINTING

The Scream by Edvard Munch, 1893. This painting is an autobiographical expression based on Edvard Munch's real life terrifying experience of a scream which he heard after his two friends left him alone to walk. The scream pierced through nature Munch tries depicting in the painting. It has been proven that Munch was mentally unfit at the time of painting and this led him to render style which when done extremely can destroy human integrity. The flowing curves of art represent how nature has been forcedly pushed to its own destruction. The overtones and the multiple strokes represent the dawn of something different. Munch tries to define how one sees our own age as a period filled with anxiety and uncertainty.

Guitars by Picasso, 1912–1914. This sculpture was a one of a kind as it was assembled together from cardboard, wire, string, paper and other materials that were cut, folded, threaded & glued to create instrument a sculpture never seen before. Picasso’s maquette had a massive impact on art in 20th century. Guitar changed collage’s typical technique of cutting and pasting from two to three dimensional. It was same for Cubism because Picasso assembled flat shapes to create a multi faced form with volume and depth. Picasso’s creation was to promote the typical carving and modeling of a portrait model out of mass which are solid. Guitar was held together like a structure. Two years later Picasso recreated a snipped tin version from the original cardboard.

Not Even Unalterable Limitations, 2012. Firelei used both Gouache and graphite on the same canvas. Using two different materials for drawing gives in depth weight to the drawing. The graphite on the heavier tone signifies the complexity of ideas and thought which make the crown part of the head where the brain is located. The gouache however being fluid and used on the face signifies how flexible emotions and expressions are. Using violet color expresses motion and symbolizes energy.

What is design?

Design in simple words is to do or plan an idea with a certain direction in consideration. It can also be described as the creation of a product with the main concern of enhancing human experience with the help of better solutions. Design can be imagination run wild but with a pre-set of intentions. A design provides direction and should serve as a communication tool to all the humans dealing with it. The purpose of design is that the information or message conveyed is actually implemented.

The key concepts of design

Design is art with features of sciences, it takes elements from both. Designers can express emotions and leave impressions through their work, but this is not their main goal. Designing takes the creating from art, and problem solving from science. It exists to address a particular need. Steve Jobs said “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” The creative design processes are best when approached in a systemic way. The objective of designing is to guide and organize work to turn ideas into concrete solutions. Designers do research and find information about the problem they are encountering and then from this research, they come to solutions and recognize the main features that should able to solve the problem. Then with these main ideas in mind they try to find the most approachable answer which satisfies the user as well solves the dilemma. A great design can be invisible. It is accomplished when the user doesn’t even notice its presence. The user should be able to understand its rules and the meaning of its elements. Its like a invisible guiding hand made of colors, shapes, contrast etc. experimenting the best combination. Designers imagine, make, research and think.

ALESSI JUICY SALIFF

This was designed by Phillipe Starck in 1990, and is considered one of the smartest design for kitchen purposes. The vitamin C squeezer is made of aluminum which is later polished. The design shape is inspired from the shape of a squid. It's a perfect example of how the most abstract associations can inspire iconic design.

ROCKING WHEEL CHAIR

German industrial product designer Mathias Koehler's got inspired by traditional grandmothers knitting while trying to get comfortable rocking back and forth. To ease this induced motion he came up with a rocking swindle shape.

GRAPHIC DESIGNS

It is a form of visual communication and various other visual elements to express ideas. It has become like an umbrella for various types of design work. Logos and billboards to advertisement, graphic designers bring concepts and stories to life using typography, shapes, color, and artwork. They educate customers to learn, to make a purchase, or even to sign up for the product. They use software such as Photoshop and InDesign to create static images and page layouts.

INTERIOR DESIGN

Drafts of plans for houses, buildings, and outdoor spaces is interior design. Interior designers translate ideas from engineers, architects, and clients into drawings and 3D models. AutoCAD and Revit are soft wares which have building codes and construction materials.

DIFFERNCE BETWEEN ART AND DESIGN

It is a topic of debate if art and design are in fact at all different. But upon understanding the basic difference between them, it is a even more controversial and wide scope issue as to what exactly is the difference. The following are two bloggers who have different definitions of art and design.

MIKLOS PHILIPS

He is a Lead Product designer by profession and is also a BLOG editor at toptal. “Design needs to fulfill a function. Not art.” – Miklos PhilipsAccording to the above mentioned design has various branches and in each sector it has different purpose to stand for. He theorizes that functional design such as that in industrial products and interior space has to be planned or sketched with a lot of rules and criteria. A great design is in accordance to science and its principles. It has to be practical over appealing. For a designer the solution to a problem is more valuable than the appreciation. It doesn’t have to be unique. He also says that Art can be put into simple words as a free horse. It can run in all directions and doesn’t serve a greater purpose. Art is another language spoken not in words but visually, or emotionally. Art is more personal and the natural flow of ideas, it has no constraints to it. Art doesn’t need to be crisp and is not forced upon. It can be imperfect but still be perfect.

CRAIG A ELIMELIAH

Craig published an article in January 2006 giving his opinion on the difference between art and design. He commercializes design as a defined and calculated process. It is has to be approved by a group of people, it must satisfy needs and must be very objective. He believes a designer is similar to engineer, asked to create unique based on certain protocols. It should be appealing to the client but at the same time must not compromise to its main purpose of being functional. A design is more complex because it is much more than just art. It is specific and a communication to a lot of people with the same message. As for art it is something completely on different equation. An artist creates his own rules. Art can be replicated it doesn’t have its own character. For a good art it is necessary that the artist works with a mindset for delivering strong message. An artist can never be given instructions in creating a new and unique masterpiece because the emotions are dictated by the movement of his hands and the impulses for the usage of the medium. My theory on the difference between art and Design I believe that art and design may meet at a certain point but are clearly two different fields. The one thing that connects them is the fact that they both deliver message.

Art is the imagination of a person. It expresses how the world is experienced differently from one’s eyes. It is an extension of a hidden personality. It is the description of concepts that are not expressed in words. It is a means of vehicle for words. Art is usually abstract and can convey different meaning to different people. A good artwork can be interpreted well. Design is the uniqueness in an idea which sends one message to all people. It is more sophisticated. Each instance of design is an effort which focuses on a specific problem in human experience. It is the process of envisioning the creation of objects, systems, buildings, vehicles, etc. It can be user or product specific which implies users and the products are the most important part of the design thinking approach. It is about making solutions for problems of the people. Design is not about making things pretty but making them durable and functional. Design is not the aesthetic appeal but the technical working of a thought.

The most crucial key to a good design is making user interaction with the environment more spontaneous. I feel that being artistic is in a way more natural of born-with but designing is a skill acquired. It is the personal touch of a person despite certain set of protocols. An artist cant be wrong because the work can mean differently to him than to others. He can only be criticized. But being a designer is more challenging as it has to fulfil the demands of a larger majority keeping in mind the practicality of the solution. A person born with a good voice, can become a good artist by polishing his/her vocal chords but a person who acquires the traits of a singer through practice and techniques is greater accomplisher. Art or design are not better than each other in any way but a good design is a solution to a problem. It is necessary for an object to be more functional than attractive, a good design can be incorporated with artistic features but an artwork when given rules or directions loses its originality. A good designer is who, who respects art and idolizes science to create an appealing solution which becomes his signature. It showcases his creativity even under adverse conditions.
