My Path To Becoming An Osteopathic Physician

Becoming an osteopathic physician has become my goal since I had been able to witness its powerful holistic approach on someone very close to me; my sister. She has always suffered from a mysterious joint pain which had a huge negative impact on her personality and quality of life. Treating each person uniquely as a whole and not just the symptoms is the distinct aspect of this field. Furthermore, the focusing on the body’s self-defense mechanisms to fight diseases before prescribing any medications. This aspect is very critical especially in an overly medicated population. Therefore, the field of osteopathic medicine is the one profession that gives me the opportunity to restore others while thinking critically and appreciating human body.

The Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine has an outstanding osteopathic program that exemplifies its comprehensiveness and intensity. The most thrilling aspect of the school is joining a distinguished university known for its excellent and didactic program aimed to prepare successful future health care professionals. I would like to be immersed in a variety of opportunities and a diverse education that will make me an outstanding osteopathic physician. Being part of a university that provides a stimulating and challenging environment that prepares future doctors for the strains of clinical practice will help advance the medical field. Having the CTAC simulation center as a program resource would definitely enhance my interest and love for learning. At OUHCOM, I would become a more multifaceted and knowledgeable individual. An interesting read I came across on OUHCOM’s website was the curriculum approach which focuses on integration of foundational and clinical sciences along with early clinical experience. It would be a great experience to join a team caring for these patients under the supervision of experienced medical professionals. Being part of the Athens city community will teach me more about the greatness of the people in the community. Therefore, it is my duty to help and support the community by all means. It is difficult to find a University that is able to focus on all these facets of education and character building. Whether it be an ingenious design of courses or a great outdoor life, I can imagine myself thriving at Athens. This would involve me being knee-deep in coursework and loving every minute of it.

Moving to the United States at the age of 18 was a huge challenge for me since it was a total change in the environment, the language, and the social norms which made it difficult to fit in at the beginning. I can still remember how hard the first couple months were since I was not able to communicate well with others which made me feel an outsider in this new and bizarre land. Fortunately, I was able to adapt and learn quickly thereafter, I managed to make friends and find my place in the society. Going through this experience has made me more sensitive to the feelings of others. Furthermore, overcoming these challenges has insured me that whatever the challenge is I will be able to surpass it as a result of my self-discipline and tenacity.

Outside of school, my biggest hobby is fixing cars; I’ve been interested in it since I was at the age of 12. Working on cars has instilled in me very important skills such as critical thinking and problem solving. Furthermore, these skills contribute tremendously to the personality of a successful osteopathic physician.

Osteopathy would not just be a skill for work, it would be the model for affordable health care since it focuses on preventive measures and provide alternatives to costly medications.
