When I was the builder at the beginning it was easy to connect the flower wood with the soft pad in the middle to the small arrow wood. Later, I got a little frustrated because the flower wood with the rough pad in the middle would not connect to the top part of the same arrow. After trying to connect the flower wood with the rough pad in the middle to the arrow a several times it finally connected. I was relieved when the rough flower wood was connected to the top part of the arrow. If you are the teacher you need to be very careful on the words you say. This is because one word can mean one thing to us but different to the builder. If the builder doesn’t get the instruction for the first time the teacher has to reword it until the builder gets the instruction.
Three things I learned about empathy while playing 21 Toys is that now I really know how visually impaired person really feel. They really need to rely on the sounds, smells and touch to know where there are and what’s happening in their surroundings. Also, now I know why the builder will get frustrated really easily. This is because it is hard to listen to instruction when everyone is talking at the same time. In addition, now I know how hard it would be for the international students or anyone that does not know how to speak English well to do this game. This is because it was hard for me to give out instructions because I am not good at communicating. This game will be even harder if the teacher does not know English very well.
I can take away from this experience when I encounter a challenge in school while I work in a group is to pause and see where everyone is coming from and think why they are saying that. From that resolve the problem where everyone is satisfied. I can take away from this experience when I encounter challenge at home is to put myself in my family members shoe and see how bad the problem is and help them whenever I can. I can take away from this experience when I encounter a challenge in work while I work in a group is to see where my coworkers are coming from and see the pros and cons of each input. Whichever input has the most pros is the chosen one.
A theme I would like to pursue further while I was playing 21 Toys is Collaborative Communication. This is because for the builder to successfully to build the puzzle the teammates has collaboratively communicate. The teammate cannot talk over each other because the builder would not hear the instruction or don’t know which instruction to follow. At the same time, one person cannot tell all the instruction because they might not know how to word the instruction. The game can be changed by adding more texture to the block to make it easier or add more sides to make it harder. Also, if possible the block can be in different shapes other than flower and arrow. In addition, there should be a magnetic piece in every side so it will be easier to connect the puzzle.
